Instructions for Authors

(2017, revised 2018)

Frontiers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (FSTEM) is a peer-reviewed journal and publishes outstanding and innovative research results in all aspects of broadly defined fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) for its readers in the world.

1. In general, the manuscripts for publication consideration in FSTEM are invited by the Editorial Board. Un-invited manuscripts will be reviewed carefully by the Editorial Board before submitting to external experts for in-depth peer-review and handed on a case by case basis.

2. All editorial decisions are made by active scientists and professors in the Editorial Board and invited external expert reviewers. The Editorial Board of FSTEM is composed of the world leaders and active scientists in STEM fields from seven countries including Canada, China, France, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

3. FSTEM uses a broader definition of STEM fields recommended by the National Science Foundation, which includes chemistry, computer and information technology science, engineering, geosciences, life sciences, mathematical sciences, physics and astronomy, social sciences (anthropology, economics, psychology and sociology), and STEM education and learning research.

4. The targeting readers of FSTEM include undergraduates, M.S. students, Ph.D. students, postdocs, scientists, professors, practitioners, and others who are interested in STEM research. The manuscript authors of FSTEM are anticipated to be undergraduates, graduates, scientists, and professors.

5. The purpose of FSTEM includes the following four aspects.

a) Publish the innovative research in STEM fields.

b) Inspire and encourage undergraduates and graduates to work and remain in STEM fields.

c) Publicize the research results from the outstanding presentations of the Annual Research Symposia at Universities and Colleges in the United States and other countries.

d) Facilitate the communication and collaboration among the participants of these Symposia.

6. The manuscripts should not be published previously or under publication consideration elsewhere, except the abstracts of the manuscripts published in the conference publications.

7. Two categories of the manuscripts are welcome to submit for publication, including Research Papers and Review Articles.

a) The Research Papers should include the following sections: Title, Authors, Institutions, Abstract, Keywords, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion, Conclusions, Acknowledgements, and References.

b) The Review Articles should include the following items: Title, Authors, Institutions, Abstract, Keywords, Introduction, Main Content, Conclusions, Acknowledgments, and References.

8. References should follow the format of the following examples and be cited in text using the form of  last name plus year in parentheses, such as, "(Ferlez et al 2015; Najafpour et al 2017; Franklin and Hou 2015)."

9. There is no article processing charge (APC) for the accepted manuscripts. FSTEM will be published yearly in the beginning, and later might be changed to monthly when the submission of manuscripts is increasing.

10. FSTEM provides free online to all full papers from the date of publication and to all archival content to its readers in global STEM community.

11. Before the manuscripts are officially accepted for publication in FSTEM, the authors are allowed to submit their draft manuscripts to the preprint servers, such as arXiv, bioRxiv, and chemRxiv, to obtain the DOIs. These preprint servers are intended to rapid share of new research and not peer-reviewed free online archive service for unpublished manuscripts.

12. Each year, one manuscript will be selected to be "the Best Paper of the Year," from the published manuscripts in FSTEM by the Editorial Board. The Award Certificate(s) will be given to the author(s) of the winning paper.

13. The manuscripts should be submitted to Harvey Hou by Email (hhou@alasu.edu).
