Learning Plan
For Advanced Learning Option
Ability to look at and learn from student work.
Goals and Outcomes
I can look at and learn from student work.
I will practice the targeted skills in this module by . . .
Identifying 3 different protocols for looking at student work to try with colleagues
Participating as the presenter in at least one of the three protocols
Participating in 1-2 of the protocols as the facilitator or participant
Reflecting on participation for each of the three protocols.
Exploring additional protocols.
Protocols -- Explanation and Examples
Protocols are structured discussions that can guide teachers through the process of looking at student work together.
They force busy teachers to take the time to engage with student work on a level deeper than recording grades. They also provide outside feedback that can illuminate new perspectives or approaches. Protocols provide structure to help temper a hesitancy to comment or tendency to overshare. The time limits and turn-taking built into protocols allow for more equitable sharing.

Review
Below are some general guidelines for learning from student work as a group (available here).
Different protocols require specific types of comments. Familiarize yourself with the characteristics of description, interpretation, and evaluation (excerpted from Blythe, T., Allen, D., & Powell, B.S. (2015). Looking Together at Student Work.)

Task: Looking At Student Work Protocol Extended Practice
1) Identify 3 different protocols to use to look at a student work sample from one subject area (for example writing) from the School Reform Initiative protocol list.
2) Choose one protocol (it can be one of the 3 you've tried already or a different one) to use with 3 different kinds of student work from different subject areas and/or different types such as verbal, written, hands-on, group, individual, etc.
Try out each of the protocols you chose with at least 2-3 other colleagues. You need to be the presenter for at least one of the protocols. See "Presenter Prep" list below:
Presenter Prep List
Prepare to present student work during a protocol with your colleagues.
Review the protocol description
Recruit 1-3 colleagues (in addition to your partner) to participate in the protocol
Make copies of the protocol description for all participants
Select student work to present
Make copies of student work for all participants
Task Reflection:
On Canvas, provide a brief reflection for each of the following:
Names of the protocols used.
Names of the people who participated in your protocols.
When you participated in your protocols.
When you were the presenter, what work did you select to present during the protocol?
Why did you select that work?
What new perspectives did your colleagues provide and how can you make use of their input?
What questions about teaching and assessment did looking at the student work for each of the protocols raise for you and how can you pursue these questions further?
Are there things you would like to try in your classroom as a result of looking at the student work?
How did you modify the protocol to your specific needs and context?
