Outreach Events
We love to do hands-on outreach events and assist with field courses and camps to get youth excited about science! Here are some recent examples.
UAF fisheries scientists joined YRDFA’s Bio-Tech Fisheries Technician Training in St. Mary’s, helping Yukon River community members build hands-on skills in fisheries research and monitoring. Participants learned how to collect and record fisheries data, use sampling methods, and contribute valuable local knowledge to better understand and manage Yukon River fisheries.
2026 UAF Crew: Erik Schoen, Kristen Reece, Maris Goodwin & Cody Smith
We led hands-on streamside activities teaching environmental DNA research techniques to high school students as part of the George River Internship. We also assisted with hands-on activities involving salmon monitoring, fish sampling, and river habitat research.

Orutsararmiut Native Council Science & Culture Camp
Orutsararmiut Native Council Science & Culture Camp
Orutsararmiut Native Council and UAF’s Kuskokwim Campus offered an intensive two-week science and culture class for students from the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. The UAF crew traveled to Bethel to instruct methods of collecting environmental DNA (eDNA), PCR, and laboratory techniques.
