Instructions for folks taking the permafrost tunnel tour on Wed 15th March (sorry to those that we could not include - it filled quick).
I hope you are having a great time here in Fairbanks. There has already been some great racing – and terrific weather. I think it is really cool that you have chosen to use part of your day off to visit something exceptionally unique to Alaska – notably our sub-arctic permafrost – or permanently frozen ground.
Here are a few tips for your tour.
Please make sure to come 5 mins early to the start of your tour time. We have a little paper work to do before you enter the tunnel.
Please wear warm boots and clothes (including gloves and a hat), because the tunnel is kept below freezing at all times to keep the permafrost frozen and we will be in the tunnel for up to 40 minutes.
We will stay relatively clean but the clothes you wear may take on a little bit of the ‘odor’ of the tunnel – it's the smell of ecosystems that existed at least 60 thousand years ago – so it is kind of a part of the experience - just FYI.
Finally, although you might have second thoughts about taking your day off to do this tour – I would encourage you to stick with taking the tour – because a lot of folks had to be turned away from the totally full number of tours we arranged.
Direction: There is a sign at the turn off for the tunnel. The tunnel is just north on the Steese Highway (route 2) from Birch Hill recreation area – where all the racing is taking place. Take the Steese Highway north until the right turn off the Steese Highway for the tunnel (see the map link here and images below). There should be a sign marking the CRREL US Army Corps of Engineers Permafrost Tunnel Research Facility. Pull into the parking lot.
