In the vast Alaska terrain, wild plants are more than a scenic backdrop; they are essential to the Alaskan way of life. For many of us, particularly within Alaska Native communities, the act of foraging for wild berries, sourdock, fiddleheads, and mouse food is a cornerstone of food sovereignty—the fundamental right to access healthy, culturally appropriate foods through self-defined systems.
Subsistence practitioners must be able to navigate the landscape with confidence and safety. The Poisonous Plants of Alaska Project, a research initiative hosted by the University of Alaska Fairbanks, is bridging the gap between fear and informed practice through a comprehensive study of how Alaskans perceive and interact with the state's toxic flora.
The Survey: Mapping Perception Against Reality
Lead researcher and botanist Celia Hampton Miller initiated this project after realizing that knowledge about plant safety across Alaska is often fragmented and inconsistent. Her research was prompted by a striking discrepancy in how residents view toxic flora; for instance, she noted that while some people believe even touching monkshood (Aconitum delphiniifolium) is dangerous, others have hand-picked it for generations without ill effect. To investigate these varying perspectives further, Hampton Miller administered a public survey between March and April 2026. This tool was specifically designed to identify the "poisonous foods" Alaskans fear most and to map the diverse perceptions of risk held by key demographics across the state.

I grew up in Alaska, picking gallons and gallons of berries and admiring wildflowers with my family, and I've been lucky enough to make a career out of studying plants. When a co-worker told me she was worried monkshood was dangerous to touch, I started to do a little bit of research. It became clear to me quickly that there were still a lot of unknowns. The goal is not merely to list toxic plants, but to contrast public perceptions with scientific evidence of risk, ultimately ensuring that Alaskans can enjoy the state’s abundant harvest with genuine peace of mind.
Data-Driven Peace of Mind: What the Research Shows
One of the most vital functions of this project is to replace generalized "plant blindness" and fear with specific, actionable data. For many foragers, the primary barrier to harvesting is the lack of nuance in existing resources. Many guidebooks simply label a plant as "POISONOUS" in bold letters without explaining the level of toxicity or the nature of the danger. This project seeks to provide that missing detail, offering a clearer picture of Alaska’s actual safety profile:
Rarity of Poisonings: Despite common fears, plant poisonings in Alaska are extremely rare. The state's poison control center typically receives only about 30 calls per summer regarding toxic plants, the vast majority of which require no medical intervention.
The Safety Ratio: Out of more than two thousand plant species in Alaska, only about 30 are considered poisonous or toxic, and most of these are uncommon and easily distinguished from edible species.
No "Silent" Killers: A major finding to ease the minds of practitioners is that there are no silent poisonings in the Alaskan wilderness. Any significant plant poisoning will manifest with clear gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain, providing immediate warning signs.
No Reported Fatalities—But is the Data Complete? The research highlights that no fatalities from plant poisoning have been recorded in Alaska in the 21st century. However, this could point to a gap in reporting rather than a total absence of danger. Poison control data is often incomplete, making comprehensive tracking essential for public safety.

Identifying Specific Risks for Safe Foraging
By analyzing the data from the survey and historical accounts, the project has developed a Poisonous Plants of Alaska Index to help practitioners differentiate between lethal threats and minor irritants.
High Toxicity: The research confirms that water hemlock (Cicuta virosa) remains the most toxic plant in Alaska and requires extreme caution. Conversely, plants like false hellebore are acutely toxic but highly survivable with medical treatment, if it’s accessible– an important factor in some of our more rural places.
Regional Nuance: The project has discovered that some plants, such as monkshood and wild larkspur, are significantly less toxic in Alaska than their relatives in Europe or Asia, with no human poisonings reported from these species within the state.
Topical Irritants: The most common toxic exposures in Alaska are actually topical rather than internal. Cow parsnip (Heracleum maximum) can cause burns and rashes if touched on sunny days, and stinging nettles cause unpleasant but non-life-threatening reactions.
By providing this level of detail, the research transforms a practitioner's relationship with the land. Instead of viewing the forest as a minefield of hidden dangers, foragers can recognize that the simplest way to stay safe is to only eat plants known to be edible, while understanding exactly which species require a respectful distance.
Ethnobotany as a Tool for Food Sovereignty
For Alaska Native people and subsistence practitioners, this ethnobotanical research is another vital tool for decolonizing our diets. Foraging is a way to recover health through traditional, wild foods. Historically, many wild Indigenous foods were marginalized or falsely rumored to be unsafe; by providing scientific backing to traditional knowledge and clarifying the actual risks of toxic species, this project reclaims the sovereignty of wild foraging.
The ultimate products of this research—including a scientific report, a dedicated website, and printed booklets slated for 2027—will serve as a manual for safe, confident harvesting. These resources ensure that the right to harvest healthy, culturally appropriate foods is supported by the best available data, allowing all Alaskans to participate in the state’s natural bounty.
