About Srijan Aggarwal

Srijan Aggarwal is a Professor of Civil, Geological, and Environmental Engineering department at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF), where he has served since 2013. His specialty area is environmental engineering and his research focuses on topics ranging from development of water treatment technologies for removal of emerging contaminants, biofilms and pathogens in drinking water, Arctic water quality issues, biological remediation and/or resource recovery from waste materials, evaluation of oil spill response chemicals in the Arctic, and particulate impacts on outdoor/indoor air quality in cold regions. His research was recognized with the National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER award in 2018, and by a National Academies early-career fellowship also in 2018. Over the years Dr. Aggarwal has received funding support for his research program at UAF from numerous sources including federal and state agencies, as well as industry partners.

Dr. Aggarwal teaches undergraduate (300- and 400-level) and graduate courses (600 level) in civil and environmental engineering disciplines. He has mentored numerous undergraduate students, graduate students (M.S. and Ph.D.), and post-doctoral scholars over the years. All his advisees are gainfully employed in consulting, industry, or academia.

Dr. Aggarwal received his Bachelor of Technology in Civil Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-Delhi), India in 2007. After his bachelors, Srijan moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota in Fall 2007 to pursue his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering (with environmental engineering focus) at University of Minnesota, Twin Cities where he worked with Prof. Raymond M. Hozalski, and focused his doctoral research on the mechanical properties of microbial biofilms. Srijan received his Ph.D. in Spring 2011. After his Ph.D., Srijan continued at University of Minnesota initially as a post-doctoral scholar (until Fall 2012) and then as a research associate (until Fall 2013). In Fall 2013, Srijan joined the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UAF as an Assistant Professor. He was awarded tenure and promoted to Associate Professor in 2019, and promoted to (full) Professor in 2023.
