A-BON-Con
University of Alaska Fairbanks
February 26-28, 2024

We are excited to announce a workshop for the Arctic Beaver Observation Network (A-BON) Feb 26-28, 2024 at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The field of beaver science in the Arctic and adjacent regions is relatively young and experiencing a surge in interest from people on the land to scientists to land managers and the public. The workshop will address and integrate the three primary parts of A-BON: research, traditional knowledge, and management of beavers and their engineering. The meeting will primarily be conducted in-person, but there will be virtual options for certain segments.

The workshop will showcase the latest understanding of this issue from multiple perspectives in an informal format conducive to discussion. The workshop will include the latest research efforts from Alaska, Canada, and Scandinavia. Local perspectives and concerns will be heard from communities stretching from Hudson Bay to Kotzebue to the Yukon Delta. Beaver conservation perspectives from lower latitudes will present successful and unsuccessful strategies from mitigating urban beaver interactions, while acknowledging that the remote communities and setting in the tundra is markedly different. The workshop will bring together varied perspectives on beavers to forge a new state-of-the-science as we reenvision the future of Arctic streams.

Meeting recordings will be uploaded after the workshop concludes.

We are bringing together Arctic researchers, Indigenous organization representatives, and those involved in beaver management to discuss beaver current Arctic research, find further routes to coproduction and collaboration, and discuss how management needs might be addressed.
