Rachel Edwards is a former English teacher turned school counselor. She has been a Student Success teacher at Alamogordo High School for the past 3 years. Through the Student Success program, she offers mentorship and social-emotional learning to students identified as at risk of dropping out. She is passionate about helping students see their potential and reach their goals. She is married to her high school sweet heart who recently retired from the air force. Her time as a military wife allowed her to live many places, including Okinawa, Japan. Today, she lives in Cloudcroft with her husband and 5 children. Between her students at school and children at home, her life is loud and chaotic, but she wouldn’t want it any other way. When she isn’t at school, she enjoys baking, hiking, and singing every word to Hamilton.

When we ask questions, we seek understanding and take ownership of both our learning journey and its discovery. Creating an explorer mindset in our classroom, we can facilitate learning that is student driven by student curiosity, inquiry and engagement. How can educators support student centered inquiry and discovery?
In this presentation, we will experience formulating questions using the Right Question Institute’s Question Formulation Technique. We will discuss how the QFT can foster an explorer mindset, giving students the skills to ask essential questions of their own in order to pioneer their own learning through student inquiry, student engagement, and student discovery. The QFT can provide the skills to ask better questions, making each of us life long explorers and learners, regardless of age, grade level or area of content.
I have been teaching Family and Consumer Science at MVMS for about 19 years. I am very involved in AG in the Classroom being selected as Teacher of the year for 2014, and 6th in the nation at the national conference in Pensylvannia. I have been a Professional presenter for several CTE and AG in the classroom conferences within my 19 years as a teacher. I have also coached sports for several years with my favorite sport being volleyball. I am involved very closely with our community and our air force base providing services for each. Each of my 4 children have been through our system as well as my husband being a PE teacher with APS as well.

Mrs. Klaassen has also mentored/coached robotics and cybersecurity students who have qualified to compete at state, regional and national levels. She has a passion for helping students become problem solvers and critical thinkers; she also believes that education should be fun, engaging, and accessible to all!
Mrs. Klaassen serves on the Board of Directors for the New Mexico Association for Career Technical Education (NMACTE) as the Technology Division Chair and continues to support, volunteer, and mentor STEM-related programs.
She is an active member of the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association (ITEEA), Computer Science Teacher Association (CSTA), New Mexico Science Teacher Association (NMSTA), and the Association for Career Technical Education (ACTE).

This is a question that my students would ask me year after year. Now finally with Pathway2Careers (P2C) supplemental math curriculum, I have the answer. P2C math lessons start with exploring a career and then the students work the math in context of that career. All lessons are CCSS-Math aligned and are free to NM teachers. P2C has lessons for 8th grade, Algebra 1, and Geometry.
