School Smarts is an online seven-session, 1.5 hours per week course designed to foster parent/guardian engagement and create active parent leaders. Participants will learn about a variety of topics that support their child’s public school education journey. Our mission is to support and empower families with the tools they can use to help their children succeed in school and in life.
School Smarts Overview
Week 1: Parent Involvement - Parents’ role as their child’s first teacher. Did you know there are 6 types of parent involvement?
Week 2: Preparing for a Lifetime of Learning - How does your child learn? Do you know the basics of college readiness?
Week 3: Understanding Our Education System - Do you know the structure of California’s school system? Curious about academic standards and how schools are funded?
Week 4: Understanding Our Local School System - Come and learn about how schools are governed and decisions made.
Week 5: Becoming an Effective Communicator - The importance of communication between families, schools, and other audiences
Week 6: Standing Up for Quality Education - Taking Action - Becoming a leader and advocate on behalf of your child and all children?
Week 7: Taking Action/ Celebrating Inclusion & Commitment - Creating personal and group action plans

School Smarts covers sessions on family values, the importance of their involvement, discussions on how and what their children will learn in school, how schools are managed and funded, how to best communicate with teachers, and what they can do to add value and contribute to enhancing their child's school experience.
