On March 1st, 2022, the Akron-Westfield Community School District asked eligible voters of the school district to renew the existing Physical Plant and Equipment Levy (PPEL) for a period of ten years. The levy which must be approved every ten years by a simple majority (50% +1) vote passed.
· What is the estimated tax impact if I own property in the district?
Akron-Westfield CSD has had the voted PPEL in place for many years, this is not a new tax. The levy is $1.00/$1,000 of taxable valuation.
· Why is the new expiration date of the voted PPEL?
The current levy is set to expire in June of 2033.

Paying Debts for the Construction of Schoolhouses or Buildings
Repairing, Remodeling, Reconstructing, Improving or Expanding the Schoolhouse or Buildings
Energy Conservation
Renting Facilities
Purchasing or Leasing Transportation Equipment
Purchasing Equipment
To provide funds for other authorized purposes permitted by law

The PPEL revenue has funded many technology and key infrastructure projects in the district, including:
Technology infrastructure improvements
Student and staff technology devices
Building Renovations and Improvements
Ground Improvements
Building Rental for the Preschool
Instructional Equipment
Student Transportation Equipment
Safety and Security Measures
*The PPEL levy is comprised of two levies, Regular PPEL & Voted PPEL. These funds are received together and combined into one account to pay for approved PPEL expenses. Iowa code does not require the district to distinguish between regular & voted PPEL expenses.
