Duolingo is a game-based language learning tool. Students first choose which language they want to learn. Beginners can start with "Phrases," or more advanced learners can take a quick placement test to determine the appropriate starting point. Instructional practice activities cover all four skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) and require students to go back and forth between the target language and their self-identified native language.

Mango Languages offers more than 70 language courses, as well as ESL instruction, in 19 languages. Once users create an account, they can access the service from the Web or from an iOS, Android, Nook, or Kindle device.

Rosetta

Rosetta Stone is one of the most widely used digital language-learning tools around. The design for the tablet is thoughtfully done: Users select correct answers, and unobtrusive help buttons offer updates on their progress through the lessons.

Babbel supports older learners at various levels of learning a language with vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation lessons and an active online community. Fill-in-the-blank, ordering, pronunciation, voice match, word match, and error-correction activities populate six beginner, three intermediate, and six grammar course
