Dear scholars and parents,
I hope your scholar has had a great start to the year as they transition to Grade 6 and the Middle School. I have really enjoyed getting to know everyone over the last week and I look forward to seeing many of you at the Back to School night. Here are a few notices for this week.
Homework
A big shout out to all the scholars who have started the year with having their homework completed on time. The homework for the week is shown on the Grade 6 Website. Each evening scholars should be finishing the corresponding lesson to what we covered in class. Friday evening is the final deadline to get these lessons completed. If scholars do fall behind, you will receive an email on either a Saturday or a Sunday to let you know. I have already sent out the emails for this week.
Text Books and Notebooks
Scholars will have their own copies of the text books shortly. We are just waiting on the second overseas shipment to arrive in order to be able to provide scholars with their own copies. In the meantime, there are enough books to refer to as a resource in class. Students also have a squared notebook for writing notes and completing math problems. I have said I will store both books in the classroom for scholars to help reduce the weight of their backpacks. Scholars are of course able to take them home at any time to use when studying as long as they come back each day.
Summatives
Our first summative, a mid-unit assessment, will be on September the 10th. Students will be provided with a variety of study materials through Google Classroom to support them to prepare for the summative.
Devices
Most scholars have an appropriate device but some are bringing iPads without keyboards or aging devices that are not able to meet the demands of the classroom. Please refer to the device guidelines to see what the requirements are in Middle School. We use devices almost daily in Grade 6 math so having a charged and appropriate device is an important step to help your scholar be successful in class.
Map Testing
All students need to make sure they have either the appropriate app or software installed on their device before the MAP tests. The math MAP test is either on the 4th or 5th of September (depending on when the scholar has their math class). Please see Mrs Bull's email from the 21st of August explaining how to check devices are ready for the tests.
That is everything from me! I will send updates as needed throughout the year. Please see the Grade 6 Math website which is filled with useful information and don't hesitate to send me an email if you have any other queries.
Thank you
Suzie Vesper - Grade 6 Math Teacher
