Good afternoon Grade 4 Parents,
It has been a great week at school, and students are getting excited for the March break. We are working hard to complete our lines of inquiry and other learning engagements so that students can enjoy their time off.
Inquiry
In Inquiry, students completed the 2 lines of inquiry and answered questions on how natural processes cause the transformation of Earth's features over time and the different forms Earth's landscapes take and how they are shaped by natural and human forces. Next week students will inquire into What we learn about Earth’s history that helps us make decisions today about our environment in the future. They will choose how they want to use what they have learned and take action.
Literacy
In Literacy, we focused on synthesising information from multiple sources in order to speak knowledgeably about a topic, and students used this skill in a short inquiry into a topic of their choice. Students will use this skill next week when they create a brochure that connects to their inquiry performance task. They will use all their knowledge and skills in informational writing to craft purposeful writing pieces.
Mathematics
In Math, students started the new unit on Multiplication by analysing patterns in shapes and then patterns in numbers. Next week we will complete Checkpoint A and start Multi-Digit Multiplication, focusing on 3 and 4 digit multiplied by 1 digit.

Good afternoon Grade 4 Parents,
Thank you all for a great week of learning. The students had a wonderful time at the Sterkfontein Caves, learning about erosion and the history of humankind. They loved seeing how stalactites and stalagmites form columns, and how the water from the underwater lake tasted so clean and looked clear. It was a great experience and an excellent real life opportunity to see what we learn about in the real world.
Inquiry
Students used this week to test their hypothesis about the effects of weathering, erosion and deposition using rusks. Students used the scientific method to create and conduct their experiments, before using research to check their results and conclude their findings. This was a great opportunity to see how scientists have been learning about the world since Galileo Galilei, and be an active participant in science. Next week the students will start investigating the human impact on our earth's landscape and how they are driven by cultural and economic needs.
Math
Students completed Unit 5 on Multiplicative Comparison and Measurement. They completed the last checkpoint and end of unit assessment this week, and this unit was important as it primed students for our next unit, Multiplying and Dividing multi-digit numbers. This is the largest and most intensive unit in our year.
Please find the unit overview attached.
Literacy
The students worked on synthesizing information from multiple sources in order to be an expert on a topic. They collaborated using shared writing to create an expert document on erosion, and its effect on the earth. Students will be using these skills in their performance task for this unit when they have to create a brochure connected to the action they choose to take with what they have learned in this unit, such as raising awareness or changing people's behaviours for example.
Thank you all, and we are 2 weeks away from the March break!
Have a good weekend.
