Learn About our Program

The AVID program came to AHS in 2007.  We have almost 300 students involved in our program. There are 5 AVID elective teachers led by Co-Coordinators Melanie Patterson and Kim Spencer.  The 53 students of the Class of 2023 were offered almost 5 million dollars in scholarships and grants!

Check out what some of our AVID students

have to say about our program:

Senior - Gabriela Guadarrama

I started AVID during my freshmen year; many people began when they were in middle school. Everyone had a family, and I felt left out; however, when I joined the AVID Class my freshmen year, I was so profound by the environment of everyone becoming a family. The AVID program has taught me to become part of a community that brings a new learning experience. Throughout this year, the program has helped me be more organized in all my classes and take notes properly to be prepared for college. I am so grateful for AVID because, with my organizational skills, I was able to study better habits. Thank you so much for all my support, especially for Coach Buechele, Mrs. Patterson, and Mrs. Hancock.

Cameron Harris

I have been a part of avid since the 8th grade and it has helped me through a lot. Avid is like a big family, kinda there for you when you need help or when you need a laugh or even when you just wanna talk about something. They have also help me mature a lot.

Emily Esparza

I have been in AVID for 6 years. I have learned skills such as organization and time management. If it wasn’t for AVID I would not even apply for college because that is not what we do in my family. I have applied to 3 colleges and have been accepted to all 3. I have had a wonderful teacher that even if she is having a bad day she always has a smile on her face ready to teach.

Emily Calzada

I am currently a senior and have been a part of AVID for 4 years now. Being in AVID has been the best experience ever because you get to be surrounded by people who want to succeed and it makes the environment really motivating.  AVID has given me confidence to dream big.

AVID's Mission

AVID's mission is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college and career readiness and success in a global society.

AVID has always believed in the importance of setting all students up for every aspect of future success.

For many students, that path includes a traditional college route; however, in many other instances, students choose other routes such as trade school, certification, military, or directly entering the workforce.

Regardless of a student’s ultimate path to a career, AVID can support the development of rigorous academic preparedness, student agency, and opportunity knowledge.

A student will be better prepared for college and career, which is core to the mission at AVID.
