The Animal Rights Club was established in 2024 by Alexandra Iovu and Alisa Miksche with a shared vision of creating a more compassionate world for animals. Established within the school, the club empowers students to take a stand against animal cruelty, raise awareness about ethical treatment, and drive meaningful change. Through education, advocacy, and hands-on initiatives, members work together to promote kindness, responsibility, and a stronger voice for animal welfare—both within the community and beyond.
Fundraising events are organized by club leaders and members through discussions taken place during the club meetings. These fundraisers have taken various forms, such as bake sales, toy drives, food drives and selling cards, helping to raise funds and awareness for animal welfare initiatives.
There are multiple ways individuals can directly and indirectly volunteer to help animals in need. Indirect volunteering includes hosting fundraisers. Direct volunteering includes visiting animal shelters and providing hands-on care, such as feeding and socializing with the animals.
The Animal Rights Club actively promotes animal welfare through school and community outreach efforts. The club raises awareness by displaying informative posters on animal rights, encouraging students and the community to take action in protecting and supporting animals in need.
OUR IMPACT
From the 11th - 15th of November, the Animal Rights Club organized a food drive at school to support Tierheim Krems, an animal shelter in Austria. High school students generously contributed canned and packaged food suitable for animals, earning spirit points for their participation. The collected donations were later delivered to Tierheim Krems, where they were gratefully received. The shelter expressed its appreciation for the club’s dedication and the collective efforts of the school community in supporting animals in need.
Held from December 9th to 13th, the Animal Rights Club organized a Toy & Essentials Drive across various locations in the high school. Students from different grade levels participated enthusiastically, donating a wide range of toys, blankets, and essential supplies for animals in need. Contributions were rewarded with spirit points, fostering friendly competition between grades while supporting a meaningful cause. The generous donations, including numerous toys and blankets, will help provide comfort and care to animals at Tierheim Krems, reflecting the school community’s commitment to animal welfare.
On May 24th, nine club members and Ms. Merritt visited the TierQuarTier animal shelter in Vienna for a 45-minute tour. As one of Europe’s most modern shelters, TierQuarTier provides a temporary home for up to 150 dogs, 300 cats, and several hundred small animals, offering structured routines and dedicated care. During the visit, students learned about the shelter’s mission and daily operations, including how animals are fed, socialized, and prepared for adoption. We explored outdoor facilities, observed dog walking and play areas, and visited enclosures for rabbits, guinea pigs, and other small pets. In the cat housing section, students saw rooms designed for play and socialization. At the dog area, we observed interactions and training between staff and the dogs. The visit offered insight into animal welfare practices and the behind-the-scenes work of a shelter, inspiring many students to consider volunteering or supporting local animal shelters in the future.
