Interior residential painting involves applying paint to the inside surfaces of a home, such as walls, ceilings, trim, and doors. This process enhances the aesthetic appeal of living spaces, protects surfaces, and can even improve the home’s value.

Wall Painting

Painting your walls is a great and cost-effective way to improve your home. When we paint the walls in your home, our standard process is to use a brush and roller to apply two coats of quality acrylic paint. Before we start painting any interior walls, we take great care to protect the floor in your home with drop clothes, tarps, and masking paper. Also, we remove all the switch plates and outlet covers.

Once the area is protected, we repair the walls because they are seldom ready to be painted. Most walls we paint will have some drywall damage that needs to be repaired before we can apply paint. We will patch nail holes, repair drywall wall cracks, and damage, use a stain-blocking primer, and clean where necessary.

It is best to paint walls only when the surrounding areas are protected and the walls are adequately prepared. Only after we are comfortable with protecting the surrounding areas and that the walls are adequately prepared do we start applying coats of paint.

What type of paint is best for walls?

There are many paint options, and we realize it can be overwhelming to visit the paint store and examine all the possibilities.

One of the first options you will need to consider is the price and quality of the paint. Wall paints can range from $30 to $100 per gallon. The quality of the paint improves with the price. The variance in price has to do with the quality of the ingredients in the can. Cheaper paints have fewer acrylics, less solids, and less coverage. While the more expensive paints cover better, are high in solids, and have highly durable acrylics. Depending on your situation, you can determine which interior wall paint is good for you. Use a more affordable paint if you are ready to sell your house. However, if you are planning on living in your home for a while, a quality paint that looks good and is highly durable may be the better choice for you.

Next, you should consider which sheen (flat, matte, eggshell, satin) will work best in the areas of your home. Do you want a painted bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, living room, or utility room? For areas in your home that are acceptable to moister, like the bathrooms, laundry room, and kitchen, you may want us to apply a satin or eggshell finish. A matte or flat finish may be the right option for you in areas like the bedroom and living room. Note that the higher quality paints in a matte or flat finish work equally or surpass the performance of lower quality satin or eggshell paints. Most homes will have paint with a matte finish in the living room, bedrooms, and hallways and a satin finish in the bathroom, laundry rooms, and kitchen.

How much does it cost to paint walls?

The size and difficulty of the walls determine the price of painting them in the interior of your home. How difficult is the area to paint? For example, painting a living room with 20-foot ceilings or a stairwell is more complicated than painting a 10 x 12 bedroom. Will any special equipment, like extension ladders or scaffolding, be needed? Do the walls need extensive repairs?

Ceiling Painting

Painting the ceiling of your home shouldn’t be an afterthought. A fresh coat of paint on the ceiling will brighten and freshen up a room. When painting a ceiling, our standard process is to brush and roll two coats of flat ceiling paint. Before painting interior ceilings, we thoroughly protect the floors with drop cloths, tarps, and masking paper.

Once the area is protected, we take the time to repair the ceilings, ensuring there are no cracks or other drywall damage. Most ceilings we paint will have some damage that needs to be repaired before we can apply paint. We will patch holes, repair drywall cracks and damage, apply a stain-blocking primer, and clean where necessary.

What type of paint is best for ceilings?

We recommend flat paint when painting ceilings. Flat paints make it difficult to notice drywall imperfections, making your ceilings look great. Ceiling paint doesn’t have to be durable, so a lower-cost paint will do the job. Let’s apply eggshell sheen paint for added protection if you want to paint the ceiling in a bathroom with little ventilation and high humidity.

Trim Painting

The trim or millwork includes the baseboards, crown molding, window and door trim, stair trim, and shelving. Painting the trim in your home will elevate its look and elegance. We are often asked to paint trim that has yellowed, cracked caulking or has become worn over time. We apply two coats of quality enamel paint to the trim and millwork.

Before we can paint trim, we ensure the floors and surrounding areas are protected. After we protect the areas not to be painted, we have to prepare the trim for painting. We sand the trim to remove the shine; this helps the paint to adhere better. We repair any failing caulk and patch holes. After preparing the trim, we apply two coats of quality enamel paint.

Which trim enamel is best?

Trim paint must be durable because trim often sees the most wear and tear. Whether it’s baseboards being hit by a vacuum or shelving used to hold books, the paint needs to hold up and remain looking great for years to come. That is why we recommend using a high-quality enamel. We use Sherwin-Williams Emerald Trim Enamel on all interior trim work. Emerald Trim Enamel is a waterborne urethane that is low VOC, durable, and beautiful.

Door Painting

An interior door is the first thing you see when entering a room. It is a room’s first impression. Let us make it a good one. We paint all interior doors two coats.

We remove the door knob to not get paint on it and also to paint behind the knob. We sand the door with medium grit sandpaper, then clean off the sanding dust. Based on your needs and feasibility, we determine whether spraying or brushing and rolling the door is better. We use a quality trim enamel, like Sherwin-Williams Emerald Trim Enamel, to give your doors lasting protection. Then we reinstall the door knobs.
