The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) in South Africa (ZA) will be hosting a workshop on Women in Discrete Mathematics and its Applications. The workshop will be held on January 24 - 25, 2018.

This workshop on discrete mathematics and its applications will feature talks by women on their research in various areas of graph theory, combinatorics, and discrete optimization, each including some introduction for the non-expert. There will also be ample time for more informal gathering in a workshop setting to work together on open problems and panel discussions on topics including increasing the number of women in mathematics in Africa. This will be at the continental level with women from many African countries in attendance and with a goal of establishing a network of African women with common mathematical interests. There will also be speakers from Europe and from the United States.

The main goals of this workshop are to build a network of African women with common mathematical interests and to increase the visibility of women in mathematics to African students, researchers, and professors. We hope that this network will later provide support to participants as they advance through their graduate work and their careers.

In addition to women speakers and participants, the conference will be open to a limited number of professors, lecturers, researchers, and students from participating universities and from the host institution.
