Headmistress' Introduction
I hope this message finds you well.
This week has been a dynamic and engaging one for our school community:
On Monday, we were delighted to welcome Laura Kyrke Smith, MP for Aylesbury, to discuss how AHS can further support the local community. Our discussions covered a range of vital topics, including SEND funding and our plans to address gaps in provision, the importance of education for girls and community building, and how schools can collaborate to tackle common challenges across the wider education sector. Ms. Kyrke Smith also met with us to explore ways to strengthen career opportunities for our students by fostering partnerships with local businesses, government, and our growing alumnae network.
Monday evening, thank you to AGS for hosting an early Christmas Concert. Another lovely opportunity for our schools to work together.
On Tuesday, our Year 11 students participated in the Arts and Humanities Fair, an inspiring event that highlighted the many pathways and opportunities available in these fields. On Tuesday, our Year 7 students also attended STEAM Fest, more details and some pictures below.
On Wednesday we welcomed over 400 families to our Sixth Form Open Evening. It was a pleasure to meet so many prospective students and their families, and we hope the evening provided valuable insights into the exciting opportunities that await in our Sixth Form. We also hosted the AHS Alumnae Society Steering Committee to discuss the next steps in expanding this important community. This network will be pivotal in supporting career opportunities for current students and strengthening ties between past and present members of AHS.
Throughout the week, our Year 11 students have been participating in Active Tutoring sessions, focusing on building skills and strategies to enhance their learning and development.
In addition to these events, we’ve been reflecting on national educational issues, including the impact of Ofsted changes and our continued emphasis on critical and creative thinking. These are critical matters, and we remain committed to creating a supportive and inspiring environment for both students and staff.
Thank you, as always, for your ongoing support in helping us provide these rich opportunities for our students and wider community.
Sport this week
ESSA National Team Swimming Finals
A truly lovely day at ESSA National Team Swimming Finals AT the Commonwealth Pool, with a wonderful group of swimmers who all swam their hearts out and performed their very best for their team. The Inter Medley Team swam the race of their lives finishing 16th nationally, smashing their qualifying position! Junior Freestyle and Medley and Inter Freestyle teams also swam brilliantly with a handful of Long Course PB’s. Well done to all swimmers - we are proud of you all!
Football
Unfortunately, the majority of our fixtures were cancelled this week due to the weather (safety always being a priority). However, our U18 football team played against West Herts College at AHS on Wednesday, winning 15-2, taking them through to the semi finals!
Lila S Year 13 Show Racism the Red Card winner.
Art & Design - Show Racism the Red Card
Aylesbury High school continues to be successful in the Show Racism the Red Card competition. Show Racism the Red Card Competitions encourage young people from schools and other educational settings to produce creative work with an original anti-racism theme. Students from all year groups entered and a selection put forward.
We proudly announce that Lila S from Year 13 has recently been selected as the overall winner for the entire competition. She receives an ipad as her prize, which we all know will be so valuable for her Art A level and next steps, as she begins university next year. Lila is such a hard working student and is well deserved of this prize. She has demonstrated Great Curious Engagement and Boundless Aspiration. Well done Lila, we are thrilled for you.
House Sports Events
Next week, Y7-Y12 will have their Autumn Term House Sports events in school. Good luck to them all and we look forward to seeing some spirited competition on the pitches! For the relevant days, students will attend school in their PE kit and remain in their kit for the whole day:
Y7 & Y10 on Monday 25 Nov,
Y8, 9, 12 on Tuesday 26 Nov
Y11 & 12 on Wednesday 27 Nov
STEAM Fest Year 7 - 19th November
This was a great event led by the STEAM coordinator at Wycombe High School. Mr Potkin and the teachers from the other schools acted as technical support for the tables. Our students quickly mixed into teams with students from other schools, including Great Marlow school and Sir William Borlase. There were over 100 students split into 20 teams of 5. Their task was to design and make a full size prototype for a new concept in ejector seats for jet fighters.
The students worked tirelessly in their teams and ended up with some very unique designs. There had to be an overall winner and unfortunately, we were not in the winning team for this event.
