8th Grade STEM Science

Welcome to the Class Website of Mrs. Henry-Valdez

What is STEM?

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.  In this course, students are still expected to learn all of the 8th grade science TEKS and take the 8th grade science STAAR test at the end of the school year like all 8th grade science students in Texas.  However in STEM, there is a heavy emphasis on STEM project based-learning with a research, design, fabrication, and presentation process.  Collaborative contributions and individual accountability are both equally valued.   Students will have access to a workshop where they will be trained on specific power tools and have the opportunity to include wood working, metal working, robotics, and 3D printing in their projects.  In this course, students will experience direct-instruction balanced with flipped classroom independent learning.  STEM is considered an advanced course which means your student may need to attend tutoring or may have more homework than in a regular science class.

*Students and their parents/guardians are required to sign a STEM and Laboratory Safety contract.  In addition, students and their parents/guardians are required to sign an advanced course contract.
