My Chromebook got damaged! Now what?
First of all, take a breath. Accidents and incidents happen. That's just life. It is best to take measures to prevent your Chromebook from being damaged, but we understand that even the best measures can fail. When that happens, don’t hide your Chromebook under your bed and pretend it’s not there. Bring your Chromebook to the Tech Team in the library so we can repair it!
The Tech Team performs a number of repair services, including but not limited to:
Cracked or glitching screens
Broken or stuck keyboard keys
Cracked screen bezels
Non-functioning ports
Non-powering or non-charging Chromebooks
Faulty Wi-Fi connection
If something is not working on your Chromebook or it's simply acting odd, bring it to us. Even if the issue you are having is not listed here, we can try to help resolve it.
1. Bring your device to the library
The process begins when you bring your device to us in the library. We will ask you a few questions about the device and the issue it is having (ex. Was the device dropped? Did you have a drink in your bag? Did you leave the device unattended?). We will then perform a quick diagnostics of the device and see the issue can be resolved with a simple fix such as restarting the device or fixing computer settings.
2. Receive a loaner device
If your device's issue cannot be fixed on the spot, we will give you a "loaner device" to use while we repair your device. Once you have been given a loaner device, you will be sent back to class.
NOTE: Unless you are told otherwise, you are expected to return the loaner device at the end of the school day. If you fail to return the loaner device, we will assume you have lost it and charge a replacement fee to your account. This fee will be removed when the loaner device is returned.
3. Wait for your device to be repaired
Keep an eye on your email throughout the day. We will send one of two updates about your device in repair:
Repairs on your device are complete. Your device is ready for pickup.
Repairs on your device will not be completed by the end of the day. You will be permitted to keep the loaner device until repairs are complete.
NOTE: If you are asked to keep the loaner device for an extended period, keep in mind that you are liable for these devices and will be charged applicable fees if they are damaged or lost.
I suggest taking advantage of Gmail tags and filters to automatically flag emails from myself or Mr. Mendez. More information on how to do that in Gmail Tips.
4. Pick up your repaired device
Come to the library as soon as you can once you receive a message saying your device is ready for pickup. You can pick up your repaired device during class time (with your teacher's permission), during lunch hour, or after school.
The base cost of most repairs is $30, but that can change depending on three factors:
The type of damage being fixed
The number of repairs needed
Whether you have the Device Protection Plan in place for your Chromebook
If the damage is due to faulty or deteriorated components (ex. a bad motherboard or faulty battery) the device will be repaired or replaced at no cost to the student.
If the damage is due to damage from actions such as dropping the device, spilling liquids on it, or tampering with the keyboard or ports with objects such as pencils or paperclips, the repair fee will be charged to the student's account.
In this instance, a "repair" is defined as an action taken to resolve an issue, such as swapping a broken screen or replacing a shorted-out keyboard. Both actions count as one repair each.
Most Chromebooks brought in only require one or two repairs to resolve. This is referred to as a "small repair" and results in the base charge of $30. Chromebooks in need of three or more repairs to resolve its issue are rare and usually result in a higher charge to compensate for the additional work. These are referred to as "large repairs" and carries a higher $60 base charge.
The Device Protection Plan is offered by the district for student Chromebooks to help mitigate repair or replacement costs throughout the schoolyear. Devices with the protection plan can be repaired or replaced for half the usual price to do so. Please refer to the chart below for pricing with and without the protection plan:
The plan costs $30 per device and must be bought at the start of each school year. Parents and Guardians may choose to sign up for the plan as early as July 1st each year. The deadline to sign up for the plan for the 2025-2026 schoolyear is September 12th, 2025. The plan will no longer be available for purchase after the deadline. There is an exception for newly-enrolled students who are given 30 days after their enrollment date to purchase the plan. You can find more information about the Device Protection Plan here.
Please note that repairs needed due to intentional damage caused to the device are not covered by the Device Protection Plan. Intentional damage refers to damage caused by deliberate actions to modify the hardware or software of the device. This can range from tinkering with the screen or keyboard to change the physical appearance of the device to attempting to "jailbreak" the device in order to bypass administration management and security filtering.
All payments for repairs, replacements, or Device Protection Plan enrollments are made to the school's Bookstore or online through InTouch.
