The Awe of the Archive: Discovering a Hidden Chapter in the Invention of Race
In this talk, Andrew Curran will discuss how he and Henry Louis Gates Jr. both stumbled upon a long-forgotten cache of eighteenth-century manuscripts submitted to a contest on "the source of blackness.” Curran, who is an international authority on how the idea of race came into existence, is also eager to discuss the role that the history can play, today, in race relations.
