Navigating Within a Grid
Within a grid, you may often find things by using a keyword with the map. For example, in many grids, there may be malls.
Open the map and type mall in the search field. Select Find. Select one of the regions that shows up. Select Teleport.
Navigating Across the Hypergrid
Grid hopping is a term to describe traveling the hypergrid. This means you are traveling from grid to grid. For those of you from Second Life, you would think of Second Life as its own grid, disconnected from other grids. Within the grid, you teleport from sim to sim.
In OS, think of regions as sim equivalents. Within the grid, you teleport from region to region. When you grid hop, you are actually leaving one grid that has regions and traveling to another grid with regions.
Think of the hypergrid in terms of the world wide web / internet. Every grid you go to is on a different computer or set of computers. It's like when you go to websites that are on different computers or servers. It is a different process to get there. And the technology can be a bit challenging at times.
Your first step will be to get a hypergrid address to which to travel. You may find addresses at places like OpenSimWorld.com or Hypergridbusiness.com.
NOTE: You will need to work with your inventory to travel the hypergrid efficiently. That topic is covered in Managing Inventory.
Creating and Using Landmarks
Another great way to travel is using Landmarks. You may create a Landmark or LM anywhere you go. (Show screen cap to create LM and rename/add info to: How to identify, how to use, be sure and sort.
You will acquire LMs from others and sometimes inside of item packages that you find. Managing your LMs is important. Information and locations may change, regions disappear, grids may close. Expired LMs clutter your inventory and create frustration for you.
Creating folders and subfolders for your LMs can be a sort of breadcrumb trail for you and others. Often, you may find a great item, but want to come back and get it later. Chances are good that unless you create an LM, you may not be able to locate that item again.
LMs you create or are given to you on your grid of origin will go in your Inventory root. LMs you create on other grids or are given to you on other grids go into My Suitcase in the Landmarks folder there. LMs that you wish to use from another grid must be in My Suitcase to be accessible.
Many grids and regions have designated landing points. Once you get to the grid or region, you may be able to use a specific LM location, but not always. It simply depends on how the grid is set up. You won't know until you try using that LM.
