Visiting Author: Yangsook Choi

Yangsook Choi grew up in Korea. She started drawing at age 4 and loved telling her grandma scary stories. After moving to New York to pursue her art, she has written and illustrated many books for young readers. Her books have been acclaimed as "Best of the Best" by the Chicago Public Library, included on the American Library Association Notable Books List, and have received the International Reading Association's Children's Book Award.

Her past jobs include waiting tables at a Korean BBQ restaurant, flying as a flight attendant, handwriting a message on a life preserver, and drawing tiny pictures on fake nails.

Yangsook will be visiting AES from Korea from May 23 through 28. We are very excited to host her in our elementary school!

Understanding how the ES Library works

Library Mission:
The American Embassy School libraries support the AES Mission. The libraries encourage “inspired lifelong learning” and support all areas of the AES curriculum. Literacy, literature appreciation, inquiry, and collaboration are key components of the library programs. Both libraries’ welcoming environments provide access to current, relevant resources.

Hours:

  • Open to in-person students only on the days when they are in-session.

  • Online students & parents can request books through our Curbside Library Service.

Circulation:

    • Books, Audio, Magazines - 3 week borrowing period

    • DVDs - see policy 3.1.3 in the handbook for information

    • Students can check-out an unlimited number of ES library materials

    • Parents have a check-out limit of 5 materials

Overdues, Renewals, and Lost Materials:

    • Those with overdue materials will not be allowed to check-out until materials are returned or paid for.

    • Overdue notices push out automatically through email and library staff sends paper notices home with in-person students.

    • Books can be returned at either library, or at any gate (anytime of day).

    • Patrons are allowed to renew overdue items one time online or in person without presenting the book. Subsequent renewals will require the book be brought to the library to renew.

    • Students and parents must reimburse the library for each lost item. The charge will be the purchase price (as cataloged) + 15% shipping. If no purchase price is recorded, the replacement cost + 15% shipping will apply. Alternatively patrons may replace the lost volume, but the new copy must be the same title and format (paper, hardcover) as the misplaced volume.

    • Book fees may be paid at the circulation desk of the appropriate libraries or online through the payment portal. If materials, which are declared lost and paid for, are subsequently returned in good condition within a reasonable time frame, the patron will be reimbursed the lost materials fine.

2020-2021 School Year

Visiting Author: Jack Gantos

One of this year's visiting author is the one and only Jack Gantos. Mr. Gantos will join our ES and our MS/HS for Author's Week in February 2021. Check out some of his books from our library now so you can see why so many people love his work so much!

Jack Gantos has written books for readers of all ages, from picture books and middle-grade fiction to novels for young adults and adults. His works include Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key, a National Book Award Finalist, Joey Pigza Loses Control, a Newbery Honor book, and Dead End in Norvelt, the 2012 Newbery Medal Winner and Scott O'Dell Award Winner for Best Historical Fiction. He's also the author of the Rotten Ralph series of picture books and early readers.

His book Writing Radar was named one of Amazon's best children's nonfiction books of 2017. He now devotes his time to writing books and to educational speaking. We cannot wait to host him during our 2021 Author's Week!

Visiting Author: Laurie Halse Anderson

After having to delay her trip to Delhi last spring, author Laurie Halse Anderson is working with students in grades KG through HS throughout this school year through scheduled Zoom sessions. Our elementary students will join her in the Spring 2021 semester for sessions about writing and about historical fiction.

Laurie is a NY Times bestselling author whose writing spans young readers, teens, and adults. Two of her novels, including Chains, were National Book Award finalists. Chains was also short-listed for teh prestigious Carnegie Medal in the United Kingdom. Laurie has been nominated for Sweden's Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award three times and was selected by the American Library Association for the Margaret A. Edwards Award. Our ES Library features many of Laurie's books, including her children's picture books, her Vet Volunteers series, the Chains trilogy, and Fever 1793. Come check one out today and see why her writing is so popular!

2019-2020 School Year

Author's Week -- Pancake Breakfast

Every year, we wrap up our Author's Week with a pancake breakfast, where our readers have the opportunity to get their books signed by the visiting author and, in this case, even sample some of the Canadian Maple Syrup author Elise Gravel brought for the event. With breakfast served by our fifth grade Library Council members and cooked by our very own AES cafeteria crew, it is a lovely treat on a beautiful Saturday. And luckily, mother nature made sure rain didn't upset our event this year!

Author's Week Visiting Author -- Elise Gravel

Visiting author, Elise Gravel spent a week with our elementary students writing, drawing, laughing, and exploring! All students had at least one session with her, in addition to our welcoming ceremony and our optional pancake breakfast that was offered. Her fiction series, such as her Olga books, have been quite popular as have her nonfiction "Disgusting Critters" series.

Visiting Author & Storyteller: Cat Weatherill

Our fourth graders were entranced with the music and storytelling from Cat Weatherill, who visited AES on January 27th for the day. What powerful storytelling!

Visiting Author:
Neha J Hiranandani

Author (and aunt of one of our students!) Neha Hiranandani joined our Grade 2 students on November 2tth to talk about the writing process, and to congratulate our Grade 2 writers on their recently published books.

Event: Grade 2 Writing Celebration

We have some amazing authors right here at AES and were able to celebrate their writing in the library on November 26, 2019. Swing by the library to read some of their books!

Visiting Author: Katie Smith Milway

Our 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders were lucky to have the opportunity to work with philanthropist and author Katie Smith Milway on September 26, 2019. Check out her books: One Hen, Banana Leaf Ball, The Good Garden, and Mimi's Village in our library - they are excellent picture books that speak to older students about life skills such as investing and helping others. Younger children will enjoy the stories of children around the world making positive change.

Event: We Are Readers Parade and Dedication of the Bandana Sen Reading Bench

On October 16, 2019 we celebrated our younger readers with our annual Kindergarten "We Are Readers" parade. The kindergarteners marched through campus, cheered on by our readers of all ages: elementary, middle, high, and adults! At the parade's end, the elementary celebrated with a read-aloud by Ms. Peggy Sood (our library's namesake), and a dedication of the Bandana Sen Reading Bench in honor of Ms. Sen, an AES librarian for over 30 years.
