HI@CE Online event 2021
Since 1998 (international year of the oceans) that oceans have become to be understood as a heritage for the future. And the most productive ecosystems on Earth are the coastal ones, because they provide us with essential services such as, water filtration, nursery grounds for fish, protection from storms, disaster risk reduction and another integral service - sequestering and storing "blue" carbon (CO2) from the atmosphere and oceans. Despites their benefits and services, coastal blue carbon ecosystems are some of the most threatened ecosystem on earth, with an estimated 340 000 to 980 000 ha being destroyed each year (numbers from “The blue carbon initiative”- UNESCO). The area of sea under the control of EU Member States is the world's largest maritime territory, it is imperative to raise awareness for the rapid degradation of coastal ecosystems caused by human impacts (urbanization, industry, sewers, fishing, agriculture, tourism and all kinds of pollution).
Agrupamento Escolas Dr. Francisco Fernandes Lopes is pleased to welcome you to the last mobility of the Erasmus+ project Human Impact @ Coastal Ecosystems (HI@CE), which due to the pandemic situation had to change to an online event. During 5 days, students, teachers, school communities will follow workshops, lectures, field trips prepared by portuguese students, in a safe way, using online tools of Information and Communication Technology. This event is part of a project whose objectives are:
recognize the importance of the coastal ecosystems in the european sea coast by the services they provide: provision (e.g.:economic resources), support (e.g.:nutriente cycles), cultural (e.g.: recreation benefits) and regulation (e.g.:climate changes);
promote international interactive collaboration, promoting intercultural dialogue and the transmission of values of European citizenship;
characterize the existing human activities in coastal areas and their impact on the preservation of ecosystems;
increase European partnerships in order to share experiences, Good Practices and new methodologies;
sensitise the entire educational community on the concept of interculturality;
raise awareness about the importance to mitigate climate change through the conservation and restoration of coastal and marine ecosystems.
record interests, activities and capacities of different coastal communities in the perseverance ofthe surrounding ecosystem.
HI@CE is an Erasmus+ project developed by schools from Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Portugal and Spain.
