If Harriet Tubman were here today

She would have something strong to say

Her own heart she could not betray

In oppression she would not stay

The people said to her, “No Way!”

She said, “Let’s come together; we can’t delay!”

Chorus:

She made a way out of ‘no way’,

She made a way out of ‘no way’,

She made a way...out of ‘no way’,

Harriet would not be confined

Left her family and her friends behind

But she overcame her fear

And freed others; her choice was clear

Slaveowners said to her, “No Way!”

She ran by night and hid by day

She made a way out of ‘no way’,

She made a way out of ‘no way’,

She made a way...out of ‘no way’,

She fought for the Union in the Civil War,

As a cook, a nurse, a spy, and more.

She led the Combahee River raid. (KUM-bee)

The first woman spy, she was not afraid.

The rebel soldiers said “No Way!”

She sang, “Come along, come along, make no delay.”

She made a way out of ‘no way’,

She made a way out of ‘no way’,

She made a way...out of ‘no way’,

She fed the hungry and nursed the sick

In a hospital built with her own bricks

She cared for the elderly and the poor

All were welcomed through her caring door

Some people said to her, ‘no way’

She said, “My place is safe for the sick to stay.”

She made a way out of ‘no way’,

She made a way out of ‘no way’,

She made a way...out of ‘no way’,

If Harriet Tubman were here today

She would have something strong to say,

‘Stop the violence, end the hate,

Peace and justice, let’s create!’

Some people say to us, ‘no way!’

But we shall overcome today!

chorus twice:

We’ll make a way out of no way.

We’ll make a way out of no way.

We’ll make a way...out of no way.

We’ll make a way out of no-o way!
