Student Introduction:
“The Morgan Luke Freeman Song” is told from the point of view of Freeman, who helped freedom seekers in Auburn, and owned a barbershop right around the corner from what is now the downtown branch of Key Bank. After creating the song, we felt he should be recognized, so we wrote a letter to bank officials, and there is now a plaque on the side of the bank building recognizing his contribution.

Morgan "Luke" Freeman Song Lyrics
My name it is Luke Freeman
My journey first began
I was born a slave in Auburn
but now I’m a free man.
I worked as a barber
and in my barbershop
I helped the freedom seekers
at my station stop.
Chorus:
long and hard we worked for freedom,
long and hard we worked for freedom,
long and hard we worked for freedom,
to end slavery.
I knew Harriet Tubman
Extraordinar’ly brave
She helped the freedom seekers
from slavery she did save.
She came to New Guinea
our black community
We worked with William Seward
To set our people free.
Chorus:
Come on Harriet, (Come on Harriet)
Come on Harriet, (Come on Harriet)
Come on Harriet, (Come on Harriet)
There’s many more to save
Our brothers and our sisters
She led over the land
She came to live among us
To lend a helping hand
Our good friend Mr. Seward
a farm to her he sold
a home for friends and family
a shelter from the cold.
Chorus:
Come on Harriet, (Come on Harriet)
Come on Harriet, (Come on Harriet)
Come on Harriet, (Come on Harriet)
There’s many more to save
The woman they called Moses
and I were best of friends
And yet I thought I’d never see
the day when slavery ends.
It took a lot of people
To free those who were bound
To fight the fight for freedom
The whole wide world around
Chorus:
Come on Harriet, (Come on Harriet)
Come on Harriet, (Come on Harriet)
Come on Harriet, (Come on Harriet)
There’s many more to save
Chorus:
long and hard we worked for freedom,
long and hard we worked for freedom,
long and hard we worked for freedom,
to end slavery.
