Against all odds, the heart must come first, much like the reigning health problem of our community stems from the heart. Currently reaching to 147 registered individuals, hypertension continues to harbor the top spot amongst the priority health problems in Barangay Balok.
Taking a closer look into the problem, it was first revealed that majority of the community lack knowledge about hypertension, what it is, what causes it, and its management. During session, questions about the normal blood pressure, were raised. Some were confused, as they thought that their usual blood pressure of 140/90mmHg was considered normal. These provided us a glimpse on what the community knows about what hypertension is.
As a way to combat this, much efforts were given by Teambayayong, to create and conduct programs that address their lack of knowledge. Lectures, flyers were handed out, tests were given before and after every session. Results shows an increase in their knowledge, which meant, that the programs were effective, one way or the other.
On the flip side, in spite of our idealism, we were hit by the realities of life in the community. A huge chunk of the barangay earn less than 1000php per month, and being amongst the poverty line means prioritizing survival, in other words, earning just enough to get through the day. For us, this was converted to the lack of attendance during our sessions, and is one of the major hindrance in solving this problem. During sessions, only half of those included in the masterlist attends.
But there is always a first to everything, as notably this is the communities first glimpse to the concept of hypertension, and it is only fitting to offer them the benefit of the doubt. In solving this problem of gaining knowledge, the solution lies in one unspoken rule, constant repetitive efforts, which Teambayayong is willing to foster, for the reason that we prioritize our hearts first .
