Chapter unlocked as Teambayayong proceeds to solving the problem of Solid waste management. Improper waste disposal is an ongoing global concern, because of its harmful impact to the environment, public health and its overall effect to the entire local community. The residents of Barangay Balok has been introduced to the concept of proper waste management since the beginning of time. However, multiple factors have piled up and contributed to this current problem. Upon inspection , the lack of the big 3, namely, awareness, implementation and resources have brought about the aggravation of this problem.
First among the 3 is awareness, or the communities lack of knowledge. Contrary to popular belief, 82.4% of the respondents know what is Solid waste management is,and 72.3% have attended lectures on proper waste disposal. While the majority of respondents (53.5%) claim to know how to segregate their solid waste, there is still a significant portion (46.5%) who do not. This was seen during our house to house survey where 78.3% of the households bury non biodegradable wastes despite having knowledge on waste management.
Second, Barangay Balok has implemented an Ordinance from the Municipality of Sindangan, or Mandatory Waste Management Segregation and Disposal, otherwise known as The Ecological Solid Waste Management of 2020 or Republic Act No. 9003 but it’s not well implemented. Low compliance to proper waste disposal is one of the identified community health problems in the Barangay Balok and if not corrected, it can be detrimental to the health of the community. Hence, addressing the issue would not only lessen the burden to people’s health but it would establish community involvement on improving environmental health.
Lastly, resources, or in other words, lack of Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) in different Purok and that existing MRFs are small enough to accommodate the collected household garbage.Inaccessibility to collection system is also an issue for those who are in remote locations. Therefore, it is vital to expand the resources for sustainable waste management practices. This has resulted to increased preference on burning of garbage over compositing 97.7% (126).
Overall, there is more words to say, more work to do in terms of solving the problem of solid waste management in Barangay Balok, but we look forward to solving this problem with the communitiy one step at a time.
