Recognise and evaluate different structures within pieces of music
Understand the term structure and its key characteristics
Structure is the order that different parts of the song are played in.
Pop songs usually follows a verse, chorus, verse structure. If you listen to your favourite pop song you might notice that it not only follows this structure but it will repeat the chorus as this is the catchy bit of the song.
Write a description of the word Structure using your own words.
You've got all the ingredients (sections) but you have to know what order to put them in.
There are different names that we give to different sections of a song:
Intro - The beggining of a song.
Verse - this section is usually played a number of times. The music tends to stay the same but the lyrics (words) change. The verse can be shorter when it is repeated.
Chorus - the chorus is usually repeated exactly - it is the catchiest part of the song and uses lots of repetition. It is usually the section that people remember.
We can add another little ingredient to SHAKE it up ........
A pre-chorus is a section that links the verse to the chorus. It is used as it can build tension or excitement before the chorus arrives. It is usually the same each time is appears.
A bridge gives us a break and something 'new' to listen to. You may hear new lyrics and new chords and melody. The bridge makes us WANT the chorus back and that emphasises the chorus even more.

For example, in Hip Hop music the chorus can be known as a HOOK.
Take a look at this example.... it uses a very simple structure but you will notice that the HOOK (chorus) keeps coming back.

So ......
A - could be one section
B - would be a different section
These two sections would sound different.
You can still recognise that it is the A section, but parts of the melody sounds slightly different .... we would say that is section A1 - it is still the A section, but the 1 tells us there are some differences.
This can be used when talking about the B section too - so you could have a B1 section.
Drum and Bass music likes to use this way of labelling the sections of music.
