Director of Technology Operations425.356.1281weltonk@mukilteo.wednet.eduEverett Public Schools, located 27 miles north of Seattle and with 33 schools and roughly 20,000 students, set out to “create technology-rich environments to achieve [its] mission of inspiring, educating, and preparing each student…” Part of the district’s 2016-2022 Technology Plan, Everett PS wanted to improve and standardize its front of the classroom instructional technology. In 2016, Everett voters passed a capital levy that among other things funded interactive panels for its elementary schools. EPS evaluated a number of technologies from projectors to several different manufacturers of interactive flat panels including Promethean, SMART, Cleartouch, and Boxlight. EPS prioritized a partner who was experienced at managing and executing successful, large-scale interactive flat panel implementations, who could manage the precarious shipping and logistics environment, who could store the warehouse full of equipment they were purchasing, who could install and integrate the selected tools into its specific technology footprint within its aggressive timeline, and who could support the essential instructional tools over the life of the products.
In the fall of 2021, EPS selected ACT and Boxlight for its Phase 1 implementation of 585 interactive flat panels in its elementary schools. Between November 2021 and March 2022, every elementary school classroom in the district received a state-of-the-art Boxlight interactive flat panel and their teachers received significant training and support on the panels. In the spring of 2022, EPS again selected to partner with ACT to put a Boxlight panel in each of its middle school and high school classrooms, this time with an even more aggressive roll out timeline.
The Renton School District is located 15 miles southwest from the Seattle metropolitan area. It has thirty schools serving over 15,000 students. The district maintains approximately 900 learning spaces including classrooms, libraries, CTE studios, and other specialized instructional spaces. These spaces had outdated projectors and a mix of flat panels, interactive and non-interactive. The power and network availability varied greatly from school to school as they were built over a span of many decades.
Renton School District chose Promethean as their interactive flat panel because of its flexibility, durability, and history of innovation in the field of interactive display technology. Additionally, Promethean provides an embedded professional development instructor, assigned to the district, to provide unlimited PD and assure a successful implementation. Advanced Classroom Technologies, Renton School District and KCDA staff worked together to curate a menu of screens, carts, and installation options. Renton IT staff and ACT team members walked each school and documented what was needed in each teaching space. ACT project managers communicated with RSD project managers to schedule electricians, network technicians, and low voltage installers to do the work. Work was performed after students were dismissed for the day, each room was finished before teachers arrived the next morning. ACT’s installation manager notified Promethean’s Education Consultant and Renton’s Technology TOSA’s each morning which rooms were finished which allowed the training team to work with teachers to familiarize them with the new tools.
