Guidance: It is important that students interact with fiction and non-fiction texts. Encourage your student to set aside time to read each day. Parents can interact with their child's reading by using reading response questions provided on the website listed below. Students can write their response to questions in a journal or engage in conversation with a parent using the questions provided. Parents can rely on the questions to guide conversations and do not have to feel like they must read everything their student is reading.

If your child has a library card and is in need of books to read, have them download the Overdrive or the Libby apps onto their tablet or phone. These apps will allow students to check out e-books or audiobooks through their device for free using their library card!

Additionally, parents and students can utilize the The "Article of the Week" resource listed below to access weekly articles and archives of past articles to support non-fiction reading. The articles deal with topics in the news, which allows students to become informed on current events. Each article also has three questions that students can answer through writing in a journal or discussions with a parent.

Guidance: Encourage your student to take time writing each day. Students can practice informative, narrative and argumentative writing at home by responding to writing prompts. The New York Times provides a collection of 1,000 writing prompts to help students come up with ideas. Consider using these prompts to help get students writing each day.

For an added challenge, students could consider submitting a piece of writing to the New York Times student editorial contest. The contest in open until April 21. The New Your Times Editorial contest page (linked below) provides many resources for more prompts, lessons on argumentative writing, webinars, and examples texts.

While writing, students should work to use proper grammar, punctuation, spelling and capitalization while writing. This could be checked with a service like Grammarly. Additionally, tools such as Google Docs or Microsoft Word will provide spell check and other suggested edits for students.

Guidance: Encourage your student take opportunities to think like a mathematician every day. The following 2 resources provide tutorials and practice for math concepts taught at all levels of high school math.

Kahn Academy provides free lessons and content in nearly all areas of mathematics and can be used to review concepts or stretch a student in an area of new learning.

IXL Math is offering 90 free days of service during the COVID-19 closure. IXL Math provides math practice modules. Students practice one math lesson at a time, earning certificates and virtual awards. Parents can access reports on student performance.

Guidance: Encourage your student to take opportunities to think like a scientist every day. The following 2 sites provide resources and activities to learn about all science and one that helps you understand the coronavirus and other viruses.

PBS Nova Labs provides free lessons, videos, and content in nearly all areas of science and can be used to review concepts or stretch a student in an area of new learning.

Exploratorium provides videos and activities to understand the coronavirus and other viruses.

Guidance: Even though most places to workout or exercise are closed, it is important to remember that students should still find ways to be active. Consider taking advantage of the soon-to-be nice weather and outdoor resources that are available such tennis courts, running/walking/cycling paths, parks, etc.

Keep in mind the advantages of eating foods that boost the body's immune system and exercise indoors when unable to outside. The following resources provides indoor exercise tips and resources for strength and conditioning.

Guidance: Creativity through visual art comes in many media with drawing as a fundamental form of communication for all areas of art practice. Drawing is a powerful tool for organizing and communicating ideas and concepts from our thinking into an image we can share. Drawing helps us develop ideas especially when we are transferring them from a 2 dimensional sketch, illustration or diagram to a 3 dimensional form, sculpture or model. Drawing helps us evaluate, study and record a 3 dimensional form through a 2 dimensional interpretation. In short, drawing and sketching are powerful tools for idea development and communication. If you can transfer an idea from 2D to 3D form and back you have mastered a very powerful creative tool.

Please encourage your student to draw everyday. Ask them about the processes they used when creating their work. Remember, this is their interpretation and will be created from their perspective. If you have the opportunity, draw alongside them so you can share the experience.

Understanding art as a study of humans and society is extremely important. There are many museums that have virtual components and online galleries which can be found on the Google Arts and Culture website and app. Consider the Metropolitan Museum of Art or the National Gallery, or you could search for a specific artist or medium. Instagram is also a platform used by many contemporary artists in many areas of study. Find art that interests you and take turns sharing your observations about the art and talk about the message that the artist might be sharing with us through their work.

Guidance: Our normal routines are very different right now. Children and teenagers may have a difficult time adapting to changes in their routines. Below are two resources to help support student mental health.
