On this team, you'll get to...
and most importantly,
NOTE: Most of the information on this page pertains to swimming. If you are a diver or interested in diving, please head over to the diving website by clicking here.
Northglenn High School girls swimming & diving is a co-op team with Thornton as well as a few other schools in the area. Our team members come from a variety of backgrounds and range from brand new swimmers to competitive year-round swimmers.Â
Our team practices five days a week, mostly afternoons, at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center (VMAC). Most of our meets also take place at this facility. Please note that VMAC is shared with Mountain Range, Horizon, Legacy, and Thornton. Because of the shared space and the facility being owned by the district, our practice and meet schedule is determined by the district and is sometimes subject to changes outside of our control.
"Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out." - Robert Collier
All team members should be present at practices and meets whenever possible. It is completely understandable if there are valid conflicts. However, the basic act of being present at mandatory activities is crucial to the long-term success of this program.
All team members must put academics first. Those who are failing one class will be asked to spend a portion of practice each day working on homework. Those who are failing two or more classes at the beginning of a week are ineligible to compete that week. Those who are failing two or more classes at the end of the fall semester will be ineligible to compete at any point during the spring semester.
All team members should be ready to try. Whether it’s trying a new skill, trying to make a difficult interval, or trying a new race strategy, you don't have to have immediate success––you just need to be ready to try in the face of each new challenge.
All team members should embrace the concept of being on a team: it comes with a responsibility to love and respect the other members of the team. There is no room for hatred, exclusion, bullying, harassment, selfishness, or any other acts or attitudes of poor character. It also comes with a responsibility to be the best version of yourself possible, because you represent something bigger than yourself.
All team members and their parents/guardians should be open to respectful, clear, and direct communication. This kind of communication is a foundational element of any good team, and it serves a number of important purposes:
It helps the coach to understand the needs of her team, especially when those needs seem to conflict with typical expectations
It sheds light on gray areas whenever they may arise
It aids problem-solving, whether the problems that arise are personal or interpersonal
It allows trust to grow, both among team members and between team families and the coach
As long as it remains respectful, it can facilitate the healthy expression of emotion and frustration, leading to greater empathy and understanding among team members, their families, and the coaches
Our season falls between mid-November and mid-February. Preseason typically starts the last week of October or the first week of November and lasts two weeks. These practices are do not count toward or against your attendance, and they are largely geared towards beginners who need extra instruction prior to the season's start.
You do not have to try out to join the swim team. Once you register to participate and provide an up-to-date physical, you are free to participate in practice. At this time, we do have a skills assessment and time trial which are completed in the beginning of the season, and this will help us determine whether you will do better in an instructional group or a training group.
Please bring your own swimsuit, cap, goggles, and water bottle to practice. There are kickboards and pull buoys provided by the facility, and we provide fins and paddles. It's also recommended that you have a simple snack with you when you come to practice, as this can be useful in the case of fatigue or low blood sugar. If you have specific questions about any of this, please email Coach Cardie.
Team members are responsible for their own transportation to and from practices and meets. Please reach out if you need help with this!
Coaches will notify school administration when early dismissal or missed class is required for a meet, and this absence will be excused. However, it is the student-athlete's responsibility to make sure she communicates well with her teachers to stay on top of any missed work and request additional resources as needed.
If participating in multiple sports during the same season, the student-athlete will just need to communicate with the coaches to find a balance in participation.
Parents will need to attend the pre-season meeting for all team parents, as well as an individual Zoom meeting with their student-athlete during the preseason to discuss the placement of their athlete as well as address any specific needs or concerns your family or student-athlete might have. They are also expected to keep up with email communications from coaches and administration. When the opportunity to volunteer at an event arises, parents are encouraged to help out whenever possible.
All team members will be given a team cap and team suit during the season, which they can keep. In addition, they will get to check out a bag and team jacket + shorts at the beginning of each season (these items must be returned at the end of each season). What we can provide above and beyond the team suit and cap each season depends wholly on our fundraising account.
