Educational Background-
I graduated from Pelican Rapids High School in 2008 then ventured to the University of Minnesota, Crookston for my undergraduate degree. I graduated in 2012 with a B.S. in Agricultural Education, emphasis in Natural & Managed Environmental Education and Agricultural Science & Technology Education, as well as a minor in coaching.
After a short break from formal schooling, I began my quest for a masters degree from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities in the fall of 2013. I graduated in May 2019 with a Masters of Education (M.Ed.) in Agricultural Education.
Teaching History-
I have been teaching for 13 years:
3 years in the Lakeview School District in Cottonwood, MN where I taught a variety of agriculture and shop courses. I also served as the FFA chapter advisor and Head Coach for the Dance Team for 2 seasons.
For 10 years, I have taught at Ada-Borup-West where I teach agriculture courses for students in grades 8-12. I also serve as the FFA chapter advisor for 8-12th grade members, year-round.
Teaching Philosophy-
I believe that all students are capable of learning but need to take their education into their own hands. Ownership of ones' own education creates a more concrete bond between students and the materials being presented. It is not enough to just present material and expect students to connect with it. The why is just as important as the how in learning!
Students need to be challenged and presented with knowledge in a variety of ways. Hands-on learning along with traditional classroom settings can benefit all types of learners and make their days a little bit more interesting. I design my courses to have continued hands-on work, partner and small group collaboration along with technology integration to keep the mundane to a minimum. Students are encouraged to ask questions during lessons so we can all learn and grow as a group. The best lessons are the ones that come from student questions and interests!
I believe that it is the role of educators to help students achieve their personal, educational, and career goals, no matter what they might be. It is our responsibility to help teach the thinkers, do-ers, and makers of tomorrow's world and guide them down the path to the students' ideal place of success.
It is important for me to have my students learn "real world" values above all other classroom curriculum. Students entering the world as young adults should know how to evaluate, critique, listen, discuss, and value the opinions of others around them. It is important that my students know that I respect them and value their opinions, questions, concerns and comments in relation to both the curriculum and me as a teacher.
