Kindergarten Mathematics

Building Number Sense

Kindergarten mathematics focuses greatly on developing "number sense" on the most basic levels. Number sense essentially refers to a student's “fluidity and flexibility with numbers,” (Gersten & Chard, 2001). He/She has a sense of what numbers mean, understands their relationship to one another, is able to perform mental math, understands symbolic representations, and can use those numbers in real world situations.

Math Journals

In kindergarten, students use daily math journals and manipulatives to solve problems on the topic or skill being learned.

Number Talks

Number talks are short, fast-paced math exercises that strengthen students' number sense. Many of these exercises deal with subitizing and part-whole relationships.
