Spring Deadlines and Events for College Office Tasks
Week 14: Film Portfolios, Advice from Current Seniors & SAT Registration
Week 13: Alternatives Postsecondary Options
Alternative Postsecondary Options
We know college is not for everyone, so please review this folder of alternative options to college. There are TONS of other options out there so if you know you feel that college isn't the right choice, come check in with us and we can help you find other programs and opportunities!
Week 12: Learning About Colleges Online
Week 11: Financial Aid & Family Income Forms
Please complete one of the following family income forms by Friday, May 12th
Week 10: Electronic Requests for Teachers Letters of Recommendation
Step 2: Electronic Request of Teacher Letters of Rec
You should only proceed with adding the electronic official teacher recommendation request on Overgrad once your teacher has VERBALLY AGREED to write you recommendation. Please follow the directions outlined in the PPT to add the electronic request to Overgrad.
Week 9: Verbal Requests for Teachers Letters of Recommendation
Step 1: Verbal Request for Teacher Letters of Recommendation
Please review this PPT to learn about how letters of recommendations from teachers work and who you should be asking. The first step once you know who to ask, is to verbally talk to your teacher and ask if they would be willing to write you a letter. Teachers get asked for A LOT of letters, so it is their right to say no or suggest maybe there is a better option. Your verbal requests for recommendations are due Friday, April 28th. Next week's roll out of information will discuss step two of getting a letter of recommendation: adding the request to Overgrad.
Week 8: The College Essay
This PPT walks you through what the college essay(also known as the personal statement) is and how important it is in your college application process next year. It is one of the only aspects of the college process you can get started on now! Check out this information and let us know if you have questions or need us to review an essay for feedback.
Week 7: College Lists & Deadlines
Week 6: Opportunity Programs
This week we wanted to go more in depth about opportunity programs including their academic and financial requirements, benefits, and more! Later this spring we will be sharing the family income form where we will review you for programs like these and other financial aid opportunities. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have questions!
Week 5: Brag Sheet
This week you will be shared on a personalized Google doc called your Brag Sheet. This houses specific questions about you that you will need to answer. It will provide the College Office along with yoru future teachers who will be writing your letter of recommendation information about you, your high school experience, and future plans. The deadline to complete your brag sheet is Wednesday, April 5th(before we leave for spring break). There isn't a place to "hand it in". A member of the College Office will review it on the deadline for completion.
Week 4: Creating a Personal Email
If you haven't already, this week you should create a specific personal email dedicated to college. Your TvF email will be deactivated at the end of your senior year, so having a personal email tied to your college and financial aid is super important! It's also nice to have an email dedicated to college things so you don't get a ton of emails from colleges in your other emails. Please review this PPT as to why personal emails are so important.
Week 3: Types of Colleges - CUNYs, SUNYs, & Private/Out-of-State
This week's information will cover what a CUNY, SUNY, and private or out-of-state college is. This will be important information for building your college list and researching colleges now.
Week 2: Overview of Overgrad & Two Year vs. Four Year College
Introduction to Overgrad
In advisory, all juniors got access to Overgrad, an online career and college research tool. It will be a very important part of the college process next year, but can be used this year to look up careers and colleges. If you were absent yesterday(2/13) we will have a make up session this Thursday.
Week 1: Virtual Junior College Night
Please see below for the materials shared during our Virtual Junior College Night presentations offered in English and Spanish. This event will kick off our weekly emails of information to juniors and their families, so you will continue to get more information throughout the rest of the semester and next year.
