Parent Onboarding
As a parent at Acton Academy you have a unique, yet fulfilling journey ahead. While most of what you need is deep within you, Jake Thompson, founder of Heroes Academy: An Acton Academy and director of the Acton Academy Network, created a set of videos and tools that will further equip you on your journey to becoming a heroic Acton parent. We hope these help equip you to navigate the challenges you will surely face.

Sometimes we speak of warm hearted and tough minded as two separate efforts, when in reality, the greatest guides, parents and mentors are warm hearted and tough minded at the same time. Each of us is naturally more one than the other, but it truly is a hero's journey to become both warm hearted and tough minded together. One example of this in the studio is a learner who violated a promise in the studio and responding "Cooper, the makerspace is not available during discussions. Your choices are to join us at the rug, or read quietly at your desk. Which would you like to choose? [Let the learner choose] During passions time later today the makerspace is available, what did you want to make today? I'd love to come watch, I'll plan to be there."
Question for Parents to ponder:
Am I more naturally tough minded or warm hearted in how I communicate?
If more tough minded, ask yourself, how can I be more warm hearted? If more warm hearted, ask yourself, how can I be more tough minded?
Spend some time with your learner, as they're setting their weekly goals, having them share Journey Tracker with you. If needed, review the My Hero's Journey Badge booklet given to you earlier. There are many great questions and helps to better understand Journey Tracker and communicate with your learner about their progress in goals, badges and 360's.
If you still have questions, please reach out to guides for support.
