Team Pirates
Attendance:
In order to be counted “present” for each at home learning day you must complete a check-in google form that will be made available to you at 8:30 each day. The form will be due at 1 pm each day. If you complete your work or attend the daily meets for that day but forget to fill out the form you will also be counted present. If you decide not to participate or are unable to participate your parent or guardian will receive a direct message or phone call from your teachers for each class on the day you were unable to attend. If you are able to finish your work or complete the work assigned to you within 5 days. You will be marked present for that day.
*this policy was set by the district and may change as the year progresses*

Weekly Newsletter
Hello! This week has flown by. We have enjoyed getting to know our new students and have greatly appreciated the positivity and flexibility of our families and students as we navigate this new model of learning. Work for all classes is now going through Canvas. Please be sure to check the Canvas pages for all classes with your child regularly to see when assignments are due. Please let your child's homeroom teacher know if your child experiences any technical issues. Also, please remind your child to check their gmail daily.
ELA Update: This week students will read the poem "Where I'm From" by George Ella Lyons and then compose their own version of the poem using a template. Students will then record a Flipgrid of themselves reading their poem and we will view them in class.
SCIENCE Update: Hey Pirates! For the following unit on body systems, we will continue to learn that to burn food for the release of energy stored in it, oxygen must be supplied to cells, and carbon dioxide removed. Lungs take in oxygen for the combustion of food and eliminate the carbon dioxide produced. The urinary system disposes of dissolved waste molecules, the intestinal tract removes solid wastes, and the skin and lungs aid in the transfer of thermal energy from the body. The circulatory system moves all these substances to or from cells where they are needed or produced, responding to changing demands. The human body has a set of systems, which regulate the internal environment and strive to give our cells the necessary conditions they need to function. These systems are made up of organs; each organ system functions in the human body and works in cooperation with other systems to benefit the entire organism. The skeletal system provides the support for movement and protection of internal organs. The muscular system creates the force that enables the body to move and carry out different functions related to movement. The body’s circulatory, respiratory, digestive and urinary systems work in combination to supply all cells with what they need to function properly and remove wastes. The reproductive system enables the organism to make more of its kind. The immune system protects cells from microscopic invaders. The nervous system controls body processes by using electrical impulses via a network of nerves. The endocrine system uses chemical messages called hormones, which are released into the blood and regulate many bodily processes. The endocrine and nervous systems are two control systems that keep the body in balance (homeostasis). Body systems work together in maintaining a constant internal environment. When the balance is disrupted, the body systems may not function properly and human health can suffer.
Social Studies Update: This week we are beginnig our first Topic for Social Studies, that we call "Social Studies 101." If you take college courses one day, they will all have a number after the name (101, 201, 302, etc). We begin our school year with Social Studies 101, a couple of weeks of asking and answering the questions "WHY do we take a class called Social Studies," "HOW do we engage with the Studies Studies," and "WHAT do we use to investigate the Social Studies." By the end of these couple of weeks, you should be able to answer these important questions.
The first lesson is titled "Why Social Studies?" I will post the Google Slides that I used during our class lecture and discussion, as well as a recording of one of the actual live Google Meet classes. There will be a new assignment posted here on Canvas for you to complete the day after the Live Meeting. The assignment will be for a grade.
Pirate Math Update: This week we will begin our first unit on Number Systems. We start with some review and discussion on how to interpret negative numbers. We will jump pretty quickly to computing with integers and begin to lay a strong foundation for the skills needed to build on for the rest of the year. We will also continue to work together on our "Four 4's" challenge that we started this week. If your student has not performed a "Mathemagic" trick on you yet, be sure to ask them to show the trick they learned this week. Thanks for a great start! Mr. D.
Virtual Pod Tour
7th Grade Supply List
ELA: an independent reading book is always needed (can be digital), notebook paper for rough drafting, writing utensils. During virtual learning most of our materials will be digital, but I always recommend students have an extra composition book for journaling.
SCIENCE: A 1-3" notebook with notebook paper to take notes when needed, pens/pencils, markers or crayons, handheld pencil sharpener, ear buds. Once we are back in the classroom and completing labs.. 1 composition notebook
SOCIAL STUDIES: 1" three ring notebook, Coloring utensils, Earbuds/headphones, Pencils, Courage, Determination and Spirit.
MATHEMATICS: You will need a composition notebook, sharpened pencils, an open mind and a positive attitude. Colored pencils, ruler, compass and protractor would be helpful but not mandatory. We will be working on math with pencil and paper even though we are currently in a remote environment.
