Watch this video to develop your counting skills for the numbers 1-20. After counting to 20 the singer says "y eso es", meaning "and that's it."

March and April: This month students are woking on:

  • A story called Billy La Bufanda
    • This story is about a scarf that goes places and does things, but actually doesn't go anywhere or do anything because he's just a scarf. Lol. Yes, this is a nonsensical story that is told as a song. The kids think it's catchy and funny. Take a look at the video, to the right.
  • In this story we are considering these words and structure (note that many are cognates, words that sound similar in English and Spanish):
    • nouns: "bufanda" --> scarf, "botas" --> boots, "espaguetis" --> spaghetti, "medicina" --> medicine, "basquetbol" --> basketball
    • place nouns: "farmacia" --> pharmacy, "estadio" --> stadium, "restaurante" --> restaurant, "casa" --> house.
    • body part nouns: "ojos" --> eyes, "boca" --> mouth, "dientes" --> teeth
    • "fue" --> went

February: This month students worked on:

  • Guessing numbers 1-20, using the words "más" and "menos." --> more and less
  • The question: “Qué hay en la bolsa?” --> What is in the bag?
  • The words: “Lápiz”--> pencil and “marcador”--> marker
  • The question: "Cuál bolsa te gusta?" --> Which bag do you like?
  • The verbs: "tengo" and "tienes." --> I have, and You have.
  • Students played guessing games where they asked eachother, "¿Tienes mi _______?" --> Do you have my _____?" and answered "“Sí, lo tengo.” Or “No lo tengo.” --> Yes, I have it or No, I don't have it.
  • Students played a game where they used "tengo" and "tienes" in another way, namely in talking about birthdays: "¿Cuántos años tienes?" --> How many years do you have? (aka: How old are you?). Students responded "Tengo ______ años."

December and January: This month students worked on:

  • The concepts listed in previous months, as well as . . .

Students studied a Youtube video about a baby, Baby Micah, who laughs hysterically when his dad rips a piece of paper. As we watch I narrate and ask questions. Then students read about the story, translate, draw a comic and answer questions in Spanish.

  • The word "hay" --> "there is" , "Hay un bebé," "Hay un papá "Hay un papel."--> There is a baby, dad, paper.
  • The statements: “El bebé se ríe” and “El bebé llora.” --> The baby Laughs, and The baby cries
  • The statement: “El papá rompe el papel” --> The dad rips the paper.
  • The question words: “Qué” --> What? , “Quién” --> Who?, “Por qué?” --> Why?

November: This month students worked on:

  • verbs: they sit, they stand, they jump, they march, they dance, they sing, they laugh.
  • Statement: "Es un chico" --> It is a boy
  • Statement: "Es una chica" --> It is a girl
  • Statement: "Qué amable" --> How kind
  • "The boy is kind/not kind", "the girl is kind/not kind"
  • the question word: "¿Por qué?
  • the question, "¿Cómo te llamas?" and the answer, "Me llamo _____."
  • Questions: "¿Eres un chico?"--> Are you a boy?, "¿Eres una chica?" --> Are you a girl?

October: This months students are working on:

  • Study of Day of the Dead
    • learn about and take notes on the basic principles and practices of the holiday
    • learn that you don't need to have any particular belief system to study the cultural practices of a group of people
    • view photographs from the holiday and and distinguish whether they reflect something "beautiful," "delicious" or "fun."
    • Make paper flowers to either for fun or to dedicate to someone they know who has passed away
    • Practice and perform a "reader's theatre" (a script that is read/performed without acting) about the holiday

September: Students worked on:

  • Our new opening song: "Hola, Hola" --> Hello, Hello, and and our closing song "A-a-adiós" --> Goodbye
  • Numbers 1-20
  • Classroom expectations, grading policies, procedures, class jobs and materials organization
  • Verbs: "se sientan" --> they sit, "se levantan" --> they stand, "saltan" --> they jump, "marchan" --> they march, and "bailan" --> they dance
  • Adverbs: "rápido" and "despacio" --> quickly and slowly
