Drum Building and Preformance Tradition
We are excited to announce our upcoming LEAF artist residency and LEAF festival performance opportunity, which will take place the week of October 11th and on Saturday morning, October 16th
LEAF is our local Lake Eden Arts Festival, which brings performing artists from around the world to perform and do outreach in area schools and community programs. Claxton Elementary has a tradition of providing this opportunity for our fifth grade and this year we will have the good fortune to work again with drummer and drum builder, Steven Turner and his organization, Giving Tree Music.
Steven Turner has visited Claxton before to lead group drumming and to do his drum building residency with our 5th graders. This year he will spend the week of October 11th with our 5th grade, leading them in designing and constructing their own hand drums here at school. This artist residency, sponsored by our Claxton PTO and Home Depo, will culminate with the opportunity for our 5th graders and their families to attend the LEAF festival on October 16th, where students will perform with their new drums on a festival stage.
So please mark your calendars: Giving Tree Music will be here at Claxton to lead our 5th graders in constructing their very own drums for the week of October 11th, and to prepare a group to perform at the LEAF festival on Saturday, October 16th, at 10:00 a.m.
As soon as we receive them from the LEAF organization in the coming days, students will be sent home with LEAF information flyers and Student Registration Forms, but we wanted to go ahead and communicate this information to you so you could plan accordingly. You may go ahead and alert Claxton Music teacher Brooks Butler at brooks.butler@acsgmail.net, if you are interested in attending the LEAF festival with your student on Saturday, October 16th. Each student that attends the festival performance will get two free adult festival passes for that day and siblings under 10 can attend for free as well. You are welcome to wait for more information to make your choice on attending the festival, but we wanted you to be able to save that date, Saturday, October 16th, in case you would like to participate in the festival experience.
