CLX 5th Grade
We believe in empowering students to take ownership of their futures, to become respectful people that effectively relate to others and achieve their academic goals.
As the fifth grade teachers, we will encourage a love for learning, personal responsibility, independence, interdependence, personal reflection, and academic skill development (organization, study skills, goal setting, academic success).

Please return Washington DC reservation forms as soon as possible. These were due a couple weeks ago because we need to confirm our numbers with Youngs' Transportation soon and determine if any scholarships are needed. If you need an additional copy, students can get the forms during their social studies block with Ms. Martin. Also, please remember that deposits should already be submitted and you can make your payments online or by check.
Please email Ms. Martin with any questions or concerns you may have in regards to the field trip.
Thanks for Reading
Please join us for a Thanksgiving lunch and opportunity to learn about your child’s reading activities this year. Our class will be eating lunch at:
- Martin 11:55
- Autrey 12:00
- Briggs 12:05
- Williams 12:10
We will then meet in our classrooms until approximately 1pm/1:10 pm to enjoy some time learning more about how your child is becoming a strong reader. Every year we have hundreds of people share this special day with our school. Please come! A form to reserve a lunch will be sent home in Thursday folders. You can also download the form here.
Book Fair Information
Claxton is excited to be working with Asheville’s own Firestorm Bookstore for a one day book fair event in our media center from 8 am to 3:30 pm on Thanks for Reading Day. All classes will be visiting the book fair this day. Additionally, family members are welcome to accompany their child to the book fair after the Thanksgiving lunch and subsequent classroom activity. This is a wonderful way to enhance your home library while supporting a great local business. Firestorm is generously offering 30% of the sales from that day to our CLX teachers to enhance their classroom libraries. Students who need financial assistance with the book fair can contact Mr. Ackerman at 828-350-6503 or can return this form by BY NOVEMBER 9TH!
Calling All Volunteers and Future Chaperones!
Whether you're a new or returning Claxton volunteer, an online background check is needed each year to volunteer in any capacity with students at school or as a chaperone on field trips. It takes about 5 minutes to start your background check but can sometimes take 2-3 weeks for them to be approved. You cannot volunteer until your background check has been approved, so jump over to this link to act now. You don't want to miss a chance to help out as a volunteer! https://bib.com/SecureVolunteer/Asheville-City-Schools/
Also, if you haven't already done so, you'll need to attend a Level II volunteer training with Asheville City Schools before you can volunteer at Claxton. The training is a one-time requirement (not needed each year) and this year's schedule is set so go ahead and make plans to attend one of these brief (~20 min) trainings. Please see below for the schedule. All trainings are held in the Board Room at the Central Office of Asheville City Schools at 85 Mountain Street. No registration is required to attend the training.
