Important Announcements and Updates
Hello Families!
I’m Kathleen Turner, your child’s 4th grade teacher. I am so excited to collaborate with you this year to ensure learning, growth, and lots of fun! I have an undergraduate degree in Environmental Education, and completed my elementary education coursework at UNCA. This is my fourth year teaching at Claxton and I love our hive. My teaching practice centers on my role as a facilitator of growth and discovery. Our classroom environment is one of mutual respect, and the support and involvement of our parents is so important to our success. I will do everything I can to uplift your child this year.
Our classroom will be focused on community building and establishing solid academic and emotional support systems for students. We will develop leadership skills, and work to establish, achieve, and exceed academic and social goals, defining and celebrating personal successes. I believe in promoting creativity and curiosity, and will work to teach your child perseverance and grit in the pursuit of meeting high expectations and producing quality work.
Students are asked to agree to the following three simple rules:
Stay in control of your body
Work hard and do your best
Treat me, each other, and our environment with love and respect
Our behavior system has a set series of consequences. First, your student will receive a verbal and visual warning (a “redirect” card). Second, your student will be given a “sideline”, or a break from the main group in order to reset. Third, your student completes a reflection sheet that allows them to think about their behavior. Finally, a note is sent to home so that behaviors can be addressed in your family.
In our classroom, we build strong community bonds and hold each other accountable for our behavior through Restorative Practices. Restorative Practices is a system of formal and informal processes that build and sustain a culture of kindness, respect, responsibility and justice. This is achieved through emphasizing the importance of trusting relationships as central to building community and repairing relationships when harm has occurred. The fundamental premise of restorative practices is that people are happier, more cooperative and productive, and more likely to make positive changes when those in positions of authority do things with them, rather than to them or for them. This may be a bit different then what your child has experienced in previous years, so if you’d like to learn more, click HERE. I look forward to being in community with you and your student!
You can learn all about our 4th grade academic content, pacing, and team on our fabulous 4th grade website! My mission is to facilitate a loving and supportive classroom environment where students are challenged to grow academically, personally, and emotionally. I will support students in the development of leadership skills and active citizenship as we our focus on building community and establishing solid academic and emotional support systems. I believe in promoting creativity and curiosity, and will work to teach every child perseverance in the pursuit of meeting high expectations and producing quality work. We are a class of lifelong learners and we always treat each other with kindness, compassion, and empathy.
I use restorative practices to build community and address harm that may occur in the classroom. "I am somebody.
I was somebody when I came.
I will be a better somebody when I leave.
I am powerful,
and I am strong.
I deserve the education that I get here. I have things to do, people to impress, and places to go."
