Hi! I am Mark Ackerman and I am the School Counselor at Asheville High School. I began working at Asheville City Schools in 2008 as a School Social Worker. I worked with students at Claxton, Hall Fletcher, Isaac Dickson, and Asheville City Schools Preschool. I became the school counselor at Claxton Elementary in 2013. I am beginning my first year at Asheville High School and will be working with the sophomore class.
I have worked as a school-based therapist for a local mental health agency. I also have taught social work courses at Mars Hill University and counseling classes at Western Carolina University.
I graduated from the UNC-Asheville with a Bachelor of Science degree in Management. I received my Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from the UNC-Chapel Hill in 2006 and a Master if Arts in Education in Professional School Counseling from Western Carolina University in 2016.
I volunteer with Big Brothers/Big Sisters and I have been a foster parent since 2012. So, needless to say, I love working with and helping children and families.
I have lived in North Carolina all of my life. I am from Moore County and I moved to Asheville in 1996. I am a Pokemon and Legend of Zelda superfan! I love anything related to Marvel and DC Comics. I love Japanese animation. I prefer Star Trek over Star Wars but I enjoy them both.
I am looking forward to a great year at Asheville High!
