Wit & Wisdom is a comprehensive English curriculum developed by and for teachers. We study a different module each quarter, and each module centers on the study of rich and engaging texts, curated to build student knowledge of important ideas in the liberal arts and the sciences. The approach is integrated and text-based: daily reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar, and vocabulary study is based on—and draws on evidence from—exceptional texts.
The text for this module is Thunder Rolling in the Mountains by Scott O'Dell and Elizabeth Hall. It tells the story of Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce and their removal from their homeland. The reading focus for this module will be to identify main idea and supporting details. Students will be working on writing informative text.
This module features the classic fantasy Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster. Students learn about wordplay as they follow main character Milo's attempts to rescue Rhyme and Reason. Students will develop their ability to draw inferences as well as identify different types of figurative language. The writing focus will be to write a narrative.
There are two texts for this module: The Boy's War by Jim Murphy and The River Between Us by Richard Peck. Both deal with the Civil War and how the war affected different groups of Americans. The reading focus will be on point of view. In this module students will write opinion essays with supporting evidence.
Kadir Nelson's beautifully illustrated We Are the Ship: The Story of Negro League Baseball is the text for this module. Students also learn of other ways in which people used sports as a way to overcome barriers. The reading focus is identification of text structure. The culminating assignment is to write a research paper.
