I learned how to cut hair as a junior and while I struggled to master it at first, I was able to master 90 degree cuts in a few weeks of practice. After that, I found my confidence was boosted and other styles were easier for me to pick up and master. Soon I found myself being able to look at a hair style and figure out how the stylist had cut and styled the hair and was able to replicate it with little to no help from my instructor.
I grew up with 3 sisters and we were constantly painting each other's nails. While I had some self taught skills in this area, my cosmetology class helped me to refine my technique. This guided practice allowed me to become more creative and confident in the multiple styles, polishes, and manicures that I now am able to do.
Waxing was scary for me to learn. I was constantly worried about burning my client or causing too much pain for them. It took me many months to become comfortable with hair removal. I look back on my struggle in this area and see how much I have learned not only about the ways to remove hair but how to help the client and make them more comfortable and give them great results.
