A huge environmental and health issue in Sofia is air pollution during the colder seasons. Now, at a time of a global pandemic, many are and will continue to belittle this issue because of the stressful situation. The problem is that air pollution will not go away as the virus and no immunity can be build against it. All the "gunk" or in other words fine particle matter from the air can stack up in our lungs which could lead to fatal results. On top of that, dirty air can make you more susceptible to a sever case of COVID-19 as it decreases your immunity and etc. So yeah, this topic is of huge importance.
In order to have clean air and no pollution, every year-round every Bulgarian would have to make a change in their lifestyle, and e.g. the thermal power station would have to be closed. And for this whole thing not to go to waste, every country that surrounds us will have to take the same actions and that is what the Green Deal is all about.
What each person can do is educate themselves and others on the issue and do everything they can to protect themselves while we are slowly progressing towards a cleaner environment, hopefully. Raising awareness is just as important part of fixing the problem as introducing the above-mentioned changes.
...of the project is to spread awareness of the air quality around ACS. This is a local problem because it is important for students and staff to know what the AQI (air quality index) is during the five hours (at least) we spend there. The objective is through the lamp to increase the interest in the problem overall. The popularization of the local problem would lead to more awareness of the global one.
Eye-catching and unusual:
inspired by traffic lights
colorful and unique
Complex issue communicated simply:
through the usage of light and colors (it looks fun)
as long as you know that it is about the AQI you can instinctively understand: green equals good, red/purple equals bad.
no need to spend time going online and searching on a website
Easy to make:
In the form of the original lamp
Motto: “Watch out before you breathe” (because of the traffic light inspiration)
In the colors of the lamp in order to make it even easier to associate them with the AQI.
Each one contains a little explanation above the emojis, that generalize what the PM2.5 value means.
Where all of the information is gathered:
all explanations considering air pollution and the project itself.
In the photo below the AQI around the American College of Sofia or in Mladost 2 or 4 is above 50-75, so it is better to wear a filtrating mask when you are outside.
There may be a lot of panic especially during the new “waves” of the virus, thus one of the main goals is not to stress the community even more but rather make checking the quality of air a regular and easy part of a daily routine, just like watching the weather forecast. Others will learn more about particulate matter pollution, why it is dangerous, and possibly how to protect themselves. And even if they cannot be bothered with reading more about this topic, they will still be aware of the air quality.
