Derrick Kirk is a dedicated motivator with a message that resonates across generations and backgrounds. His mission? To help people uncover and own their unique purpose. As a natural educator and inspirer, Derrick challenges the status quo and pushes others to go beyond the ordinary. His approach blends bold action with deep faith, reminding us that “what you believe is currency for the outcome.” 

In addition to being a powerful keynote speaker, in his role as a Youth Development Specialist at the Contra Costa County Office of Education, Derrick has trained thousands of middle school, high school, and non-traditional school students to be engaging and effecting tobacco use prevention education (TUPE) peer educators and community advocates.

Mindful Dimensions: Understanding Mental Wellness

Ever wonder why you feel stressed, overwhelmed, or totally fine one day and not the next? In this interactive workshop, we’ll explore mental health through clips from some of your favorite shows, group activities, and real-life scenarios you can actually relate to. You’ll learn about the 8 Dimensions of Wellness, break down the difference between good stress and too-much stress, and talk about healthy and unhealthy ways people cope. With hands-on activities and open discussions, you will be left with tools and knowledge you can use every day.

Hey!  Did you hear about Nic & Mary Jane?!?  The Redwood HS Peer Educator team will lead attendees through a variety of activities and discussions including stations and a Kahoot to challenge attendee knowledge about nicotine, cannabis and vaping.  Attendees will be able to discuss related topics of their choice with our peer educators, and submit anonymous questions to our team as well.

The Hidden Opponent: Vaping and Athletic Performance

This high-energy, interactive workshop dives into how vaping and tobacco can affect performance in different sports. Students jump into real game-day scenarios, vote in live polls, and test their instincts during a fast reaction-time challenge. We break down how vaping impacts breathing, focus, endurance, and recovery, using examples from sports they play and watch. Along the way, students can win prizes and candy for participation, smart choices, and quick thinking, keeping the session fun, competitive, and unforgettable.


Food Allergies: Severity and Support

How to Save a Life!

Would you recognize an overdose in progress and know what to do if one happens at school, at home or while hanging out with your friends?  In this workshop you'll learn about the substances that cause the majority of overdoses, what the signs of overdose are and how to use Naloxone to save a life.  IMPORTANT:  Those who attend this workshop will receive a FREE Naloxone overdose rescue kit to take home!


Mind Over Marijuana

Hijacked Dopamine: What Vaping Does to Your Brain, and Healthier Ways to Feel Good.

This interactive workshop explores how vaping tricks the brain and affects mood, focus, sleep, and stress, especially in middle school brains. We go into the facts, real stats, and teen vaping trends using examples that actually relate to students’ lives. Then students jump into fun activities like Kahoots for prizes, quick challenges, and creative art projects that show how vaping changes the brain’s “feel-good” system. Students also learn healthier ways to boost energy and feel good naturally. Fast-paced, hands-on, and made to keep you engaged from start to finish.

Don't Be a Target: Street Smarts To Stay S.A.F.E.

Students will learn how to “see danger before it sees them” by sharpening their observational skills and reading real-life scenarios. This workshop breaks down how to spot red flags, avoid risky situations, and react with confidence when something feels off. Interactive activities help students practice quick, smart decision-making to keep themselves and friends SAFE.


Nicotine on the Sidelines: How Sports Culture Fuels Addiction

This workshop dives into the historical connection between sports and the tobacco/nicotine industry. Attendees will gain insights into the marketing of nicotine to athletes, the reasons why young athletes are at a high risk of becoming addicted, and the role of performance, stress, and peer pressure. This will equip the audience with the knowledge on how to spot the antics of the industry, so they can support their teammates and friends with healthier decisions.

This workshop offers a casual, student-led environment for hanging out, creating, and having fun. Participants can engage in various games, icebreakers, artwork, and other activities. There is no set schedule or formal educational component, allowing students to move freely and select what interests them. It's an ideal way to conclude the conference on a relaxed note. 


Negative and Positive Effects of Peer Pressure

How does peer pressure affect middle school students? Students from A.P. Giannini Middle School's S.N.A.C.K. Club explore different types of peer pressure, where it comes from, and how to approach both negative/positive peer pressure. Participants will do a reflection activity to examine how peer pressure affects them in their daily lives.

Art with Heart: Creative Ways to Give Back

Get inspired by high school changemakers who are turning art and creativity into acts of kindness! You’ll spend 45 minutes creating joy you can touch — crafting dog toys from recycled materials, reviving crayons for hospitalized kids, and designing vibrant art pieces for seniors who could use a smile. Led by teens who are passionate about community service, this session proves that kindness can be colorful, creative, and seriously fun.
