Health & Physical Education 

All courses equate to 10 credits per year with a combination available per semester.


Traditional Physical Education

 Grade 9 

Students will take Traditional PE course offering  a basic introduction and understanding of a variety of sports and physical activities. Individual, dual, and team units will be offered, as well as an introduction into Group Fitness and Strength & Conditioning courses. Emphasis will be placed on basic skills, fundamental movements, and exercises. General rules, common language, health-related concepts, safety procedures, sport and activity etiquette, and sportsmanship. Overall, this course will aim to initiate the development of our students’ physical education literacy and successfully introduce our physical education curriculum here at ACTI. Units will last 3 weeks, and staff will have these students for the year. This will not be a choice for teachers in the main building and will only apply to those in the South Wing.


Health I

 Grade 9

The health portion of the course will cover the areas of tobacco, alcohol and drugs, the endocrine and reproductive systems and prenatal growth and development Students will be informed on the dangers of using alcohol, tobacco and drugs. They will be able to identify the negative impacts of these substances including dependency and addiction. They will understand the anatomy and physiology of both the endocrine and reproductive systems and will be able to explain how each influences the other. Students will be able to identify the various stages of prenatal growth starting at conception and ending with the birthing process.


Strength and Conditioning

 Grade 10 

*Students must choose between S&C and GF for 1st semester (MP 1 and 2). Will be available to 11th and 12th grade students if they did not choose it as a sophomore. Strength and conditioning 1 will be offered MP 1 and 3 and Strength and Conditioning 2 will be offered MP 2 and 4. Classes should be taken sequentially but can be taken out of sequence.

Strength and Conditioning (S&C) will be one of the three primary choices for all students. S&C will focus on the development of resistance training protocols as well as conditioning methods that will range from endurance-based to agility training. Additional focus will be placed on the development of the skills of how to perform exercises in a technically proficient manner and also will provide the knowledge of how to incorporate the exercises into a sound structured program that may focus on improvement in either; (a) athletic skills, (b) general health, or (c) hypertrophy (muscle building). Staff members will teach this course for one MP, offering a new exercise daily for students to acquire and incorporate into their program. Examples include but are not limited to machine resistance training, Free weight training, speed training, Aerobic Conditioning, Powerlifting and Change of Direction Training.


Driver Education/Health II

Grade 10

In order to demonstrate mastery and receive credit for this course, the student will receive instruction how to obtain a driver’s permit, a license and car registration. In addition, procedures for securing insurance and familiarization with the inspection station will be provided. The student will be prepared for civic and personal responsibilities in the motorized world, develop a proper attitude for driving, become aware of and develop proper driving skills, develop self confidence necessary to drive in traffic, identify and describe problems associated with alcohol, tobacco, and controlled dangerous substances associated with driving. Students will recognize symptoms of addiction and codependency and identify methods and outreach programs as a way of coping with such conditions. 


Group Fitness

Grade 10

**Students  must choose between S&C and GF for 1st semester (MP 1 and 2). GF will be available to 11th and 12th grade students if they did not choose it as a sophomore.. Group Fitness 1 will be offered MP 1 and 3 and Group Fitness 2 will be offered MP 2 and 4. Classes should be taken sequentially but can be taken out of sequence.

Group Fitness (GF) will be one of the three primary choices for all students. GF will focus on group fitness activities that you would find in any private or public wellness, recreation or fitness facility. Class activities will be oriented to large group activity (< 30 students) as related to strength, core, cardiovascular or flexibility training and may also include Yoga and /or Pilates. Class will focus on development of skills needed to participate in these types of classes as well as health-related fitness knowledge and the different GF class types affect the body in relation to energy expenditure and muscle involvement. Teacher will teach 2-3 units per marking period and each MP will have a different GF activities from the other marking periods. Examples include but are not limited to Yoga, Step Class, Resistance Band Class, Zumba and 20-20-20.


Advanced Physical Education

Grades 11-12

**Available to all 11th and 12th grade students after 1 semester of S&C

Health III

 Grade 11

The health portion of the course will cover the areas of Abstinence and Contraception, Sexually transmitted Diseases, HIV and AIDS and Relationships. Students will be able to make informed choices on contraception methods and the importance of the use of condoms as it relates to STDs and HIV. Students will also understand that abstinence is the most effective method of safe sex to ensure protections from all of the above. Students will be able to recognize the dangers of having unprotected sex as it relates to HIV, Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Unplanned/Unwanted pregnancies. Students will be able to identify the differences between healthy and unhealthy dating relationships and recognize the warning signs of unhealthy dating relationships as well as implement strategies of how to avoid them.


Advanced Strength and Conditioning,

Grades 11-12

**Available to all 11th and 12th grade students after 1 semester of S&C

Health IV

Grade 12

Students will be able to learn about various fitness routines that will help them reach their fitness goals. In addition, the class will also be able to create a fitness/ nutrition plan that will benefit them in the future. Students will also have the ability to achieve a LifeSavers certification in both First Aid and CPR. Lastly, students will create project that will help them advocate for an organization that they support.  


Advanced Group Fitness

Grades 11-12

**Available to all 11th and 12th grade students after 1 semester of GF

Games and Activities

 Grades 11-12

**Available to all 11th and 12th grade students after 1 semester of GF

Games and Activities (GAA) will be an option for choice for only the Junior and Senior level students. RLA will focus on activities that involve accuracy, hand eye coordination, balance and displacement strategies. Activities would be related to small sided contests between 2 and 4 players. Students would work on the development of skills and strategies in these games and be able to put them into practice. Teacher will teach 2-3 units per marking period and each MP will have a different RLA activities from the other marking periods. Examples include but are not limited to Archery, Golf, Frisbee Golf, Cornhole and Spike Ball.
