HEALTH EDUCATION, PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND DRIVER EDUCATION
Per New Jersey State law, a course in Physical Education is required of all students for each year they are enrolled in high school. Progression in skill level and knowledge of physical activities will be emphasized beginning with the freshman year and continuing through the senior year. A selection of team sports, individual sports, physical fitness and rhythmic activities are offered. A major focus of all classes will be skill development and physical fitness for a healthy life. Safety is of prime concern in all units.
Physical Education I / Health I Grade 9 Credits 5
Physical Education II / Health II Grade 10 Credits 5
Physical Education III / Health III Grade 11 Credits 5
Physical Education IV / Health IV Grade 12 Credits 5
All Health Education courses are one marking period in length and are offered alternately with Physical Education in the schedules of students in grades 9 through 12. These courses are designed to provide both specific and general knowledge so those students may develop desirable health practices.
Health I Grade 9
The health portion of the course will cover the areas of social media, tobacco, vaping, alcohol, and drugs, the reproductive systems, and prenatal growth and development. Students will be informed on the dangers of using social media, alcohol, vaping, tobacco, and drugs. They will be able to identify the negative impacts of these including dependency and addiction. They will understand the anatomy and physiology of the reproductive system and will be able to explain how it functions. Students will be able to identify the various stages of prenatal growth starting at conception and ending with the birthing process.
Driver Education/Health II Grade 10
In order to demonstrate mastery and receive credit for this course, the student will receive instruction on how to obtain a driver’s permit, a license, and car registration. In addition, procedures for securing insurance and familiarization with the inspection station will be provided. The student will be prepared for civic and personal responsibilities in the motorized world, develop a proper attitude for driving, become aware of and develop proper driving skills, develop the self-confidence necessary to drive in traffic, identify and describe problems associated with alcohol, tobacco, and controlled dangerous substances associated with driving. Students will recognize symptoms of addiction and codependency and identify methods and outreach programs as a way of coping with such conditions.
Health III Grade 11
The health portion of the course will cover the areas of Sexually Transmitted Diseases including HIV and AIDS, Abstinence and Contraception, Pregnancy and Prenatal care, and Dating & Relationships. Students will be able to make informed choices on contraception methods and the importance of the use of condoms as it relates to STDs and HIV. Students will also understand that abstinence is the most effective method of safe sex to ensure protection from all of the above. Students will be able to recognize the dangers of having unprotected sex as it relates to HIV, Sexually Transmitted Diseases, and Unplanned/Unwanted pregnancies. Students will be able to identify the differences between healthy and unhealthy dating relationships, recognize the warning signs of unhealthy dating relationships, and implement strategies to avoid them.
Health IV Grade 12
Students will be able to learn how to perform CPR and use an AED in emergencies. In addition, the class will also be able to create a nutrition plan that will benefit them in the future. Lastly, students will investigate the impact of mental health on the individual, family, and community while providing an understanding of the advances in the diagnosis and treatment of certain mental illnesses. Students will be able to identify the influence of social media on relationships and develop strategies to get out of unhealthy relationships.
