Cosmetology

The Cosmetology Program covers all of the content required by the State Board of Cosmetology to meet the New Jersey requirements for licensure. Within the program, students must complete a minimum of 1,000 hours of instruction and attain competencies in each of the following areas: State Law and Regulations, Sanitization and Sterilization, Skin Care and Shaving, Hair and Scalp Treatments, Shampooing, Hair Styling, Hair Coloring, Chemical Curl Reformation, Manicuring and Pedicuring, Related Sciences, Professional Ethics and Shop/Salon Management. As part of the twelfth grade curriculum, students will work and operate the school-based salon and gain valuable industry experience by offering a wide range of services. Upon high school completion, students will earn a high school diploma, an OSHA 10 certification, log their required training hours, and be prepared to take the State Board exam.


Cosmetology I 

Grade: 9

Credit: 10

Prerequisite: None

Students will learn the history of cosmetology, life skills that include the principles and practices related to infection control. As students learn the principles of hair design, they will learn about the properties and diseases of the hair and scalp. The hands-on skills the students will learn include hairstyling such as: blow drying, roller setting, basic braiding, pin curls and finger waving, thermal curling and straightening as well as hair pressing. Students will also begin to learn the basics of haircutting, draping and shampooing, and hair design principles.


Cosmetology II 

Grade: 10

Credit: 10

Prerequisite: Cosmetology I

This course continues on students' knowledge of basic haircutting, adding more advanced techniques.- Students acquire more advanced hairstyling techniques such as the state board set, braid extensions, wigs and hair enhancements as well as hair extension application. Skin care will be introduced including the histology of the skin, hair removal, and makeup application. Nail structure and growth as well as diseases and disorders of the nail are also introduced. The students will become skilled at manicuring and pedicuring techniques and applying tips and wraps.


Cosmetology III 

Grade: 11

Credit: 10

Prerequisite: Cosmetology II

Students will learn hair coloring techniques including highlighting and lowlighting as well as all types of hair color applications. Chemical texture services are also introduced as well as the basics of chemistry and electricity. Students will learn advanced techniques involved in skin care: facials, machine facials, shaving. The students will become proficient in advanced haircutting techniques including men’s haircuts and clipper cutting. Also taught are artificial nail techniques such as: acrylic application, gel nails, and gel polish.



Cosmetology IV 

Grade: 12

Credit: 15

Prerequisite: Cosmetology III

Students acquire an understanding of anatomy and physiology along with all aspects of the salon business including communications skills, professional image, how to write resumes, seek employment, and workplace expectations. Senior students will practice their skills on clients in our clinical area, under the direct supervision of the cosmetology teacher. Students take the state-licensing exam at the end of the 1000 hours.
