COSMETOLOGY
The Cosmetology Program covers all of the content required by the State Board of Cosmetology to meet the New Jersey requirements for licensure. Within the program, students must complete a minimum of 1,000 hours of instruction and attain competencies in each of the following areas: State Law and Regulations, Sanitization and Sterilization, Skin Care and Shaving, Hair and Scalp Treatments, Shampooing, Hair Styling, Hair Coloring, Chemical Curl Reformation, Manicuring and Pedicuring, Related Sciences, Professional Ethics and Shop/Salon Management. As part of the twelfth-grade curriculum, students will work and operate the school-based salon and gain valuable industry experience by offering a wide range of services. Upon high school completion, students will earn a high school diploma, an OSHA 10 certification, log their required training hours, and be prepared to take the State Board exam.
Cosmetology I Grade 9 Credits: 10
Prerequisite: None
Students will learn the history of Cosmetology and possible career paths within the field. Life skills necessary for success in the Cosmetology profession as well as the principles and practices related to infection control will be taught. An important focus will be the properties of the hair and scalp structure, chemistry, and infections and diseases of the hair and scalp. The hands-on skills the students will learn include hairstyling such as: basic braiding, pin curling, roller setting, blow drying,, natural hairstyling, finger waving, thermal curling, straightening as well as hair pressing. Students will also begin to learn the basics of scalp massage, draping and shampooing as well as hair designing principles in adherence to the NJ State Board of Cosmetology Licensing program.
Cosmetology II Grade 10 Credits: 10
Prerequisite: Cosmetology I
This course introduces students to basic haircutting. Students will perform their first haircuts, continue with basic hairstyling techniques, and acquire more advanced hairstyling techniques. Students then progress to advanced hairstyling techniques like the NJ State Board Set, additional braiding techniques, braid extensions, wigs and hair extensions. The curriculum also includes face makeup application, hair removal techniques (waxing and tweezing), and nail composition and care. Students will learn about nail structure, diseases, and disorders, as well as develop skills in manicures, pedicures, and nail enhancements such as acrylic and light cured gel applications.
Cosmetology III Grade 11 Credits: 10
Prerequisite: Cosmetology II
Cosmetology III students will learn the structure, diseases and disorders of the skin in preparation for the next topic of skin care including facial treatment, skin care recommendations, and skin analysis as well as application of electrotherapy. Students will learn the basics of electricity and chemistry. These Subjects will prepare them for the chemical services being taught next, which include permanent waving, chemical relaxers, haircoloring and lightening. Students will advance their understanding of skin care and hair removal by learning the art of the straight razor shave. The students will hone their skills and expand on practical competencies learned in previous years
Cosmetology IV Grade 12 Credits: 15
Prerequisite: Cosmetology III
Students acquire an understanding of anatomy and physiology along with all aspects of the salon business including communications skills, professional image, how to write resumes, seek employment, and workplace expectations. Senior students will practice their skills on clients in our clinical area, under the direct supervision of the cosmetology teacher. Students take the state-licensing exam at the end of the 1000 hours.
