CROWN HEIGHTS MIDDLE SCHOOL WEBSITE
Welcome to Achievement First Crown Heights Middle School!
After 17 months of remote learning, we are BACK to school IN PERSON at Crown Heights Middle. We will be running a Hybrid model for the 21-22 school year. Our hours of operation will be Monday-Thursday 7:30am-3:15pm and Fridays 7:30am-12:30pm. We are excited to see all of our scholars and staff!
If you have any questions please email AFCHMS@achievementfirst.org.
HOW ARE WE KEEPING KIDS AND ADULTS SAFE IN-PERSON?
Achievement First's Safety & Health Guidelines for Returning to School:
Whether your child is attending school in-person or not, please read our safety guidelines below.
Every person in our building (students, teachers, support staff, etc.) MUST complete a health screening on Parent Square before entering the building each morning.
Every person in our building (students, teachers, support staff, etc.) MUST wear a mask inside.
All adults MUST remain 6 feet apart from each other and students.
All students MUST remain 3 feet apart from their peers and 6 feet apart from adults.
We MUST sanitize multiple times a day (before and after meals, whenever we transition to new rooms, when we enter the building).
We have seating charts for students for every space that they are in so that if we do have a positive case, we can trace the location our students and be able to accurately identify who was in close contact with them.
We have minimized students transitioning room to room in between classes to reduce to risk of spreading the virus. Students will only transition to lunch & recess, Enrichment classes, and interventions if they have them.
All staff have been provided with teacher bundles that include: disinfecting wipes and sprays, hand sanitizer, masks, gloves, and their own individual and unique teaching supplies to reduce the risk of spreading the virus.
We are still offering a remote option for students to learn because we know that with the Delta variant on the rise, many families do not yet feel comfortable sending their child in-person. Please note that our remote learning option is currently only available until October 29th. We will update families a few weeks before then to inform you if we will extend it or not.

This means it is time to prepare for Picture Day.
Crown Heights Middle School Picture Day will take place for:
Grade 5th and 6th Thursday- May 5th
Grade 7th Friday May-6th
Grade 8th Graduation Pictures Friday May-6th
We encourage our scholars to dress in their very best, formal attire will be the dress code for all scholars participating in Picture Day!
There will be more information sent via Parent Square in the coming weeks, please make sure to continue checking for updates.
NEW ARRIVAL & DISMISSAL UPDATES!
For the 21-22 School Year, we will be using different entrances and exits to ensure all 3 schools that are in our building can have a safe entry and exit process for the entire school year while we are in-person. Please see the information below and prepare accordingly:
ARRIVAL PROCESS:
ALL 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students will ENTER the building on the East New York Avenue side of our building.
ARRIVAL starts PROMPTLY at 7:30 AM.
Advisory, which is when we take attendance for the day, starts PROMPTLY at 7:50 AM.
Between 8/26 and 9/3 (Orientation Week), we will keep the doors open until 8 AM as we anticipate our arrival process taking longer the first several days of school given that we need to complete health screenings for students and orient kids back to being in-person. Our GOAL is to close doors at 7:50 AM starting on Tuesday, 9/7 and any student that arrives after will need to walk around to Maple Street, enter through the main entrance with security and will be marked as LATE.
If this changes, we will immediately update families.
DISMISSAL PROCESS:
5th Grade - 8th Grade: All students will dismiss on Maple Street.
On full days, dismissal starts at 3:15 PM.
On half days, dismissal starts at 12:30 PM.
If your child picks up a younger sibling or family member in the elementary school, we will inform them of where to pick up their siblings during the first week back. We are in constant communication with our elementary school so if anything changes, we will be sure to update you and students accordingly.
It is IMPERATIVE that ALL students go straight home after dismissal and do not create crowds outside for the safety of parents, students and staff who will be on Maple Street trying to leave and get home safely.

OUR VISION
At Achievement First, our mission is to deliver on the promise of equal educational opportunity for all of America’s children. That is what we work for, every day.
At Crown Heights Middle School, we are a diverse community of educators who interact with one another, our students, and our families with respect, care and integrity as a foundation for fostering a positive school climate where the brilliance, talents, and identities of our students are valued and celebrated.
our values
Lead for Racial Equity.
AF exists to address the legacy of racism in education. We look at ourselves first. We reflect and talk about the role race plays in our work, experiences, and decisions. We strive to be constantly anti-racist in our words and actions.
Strive for Excellence.
We set ambitious goals and don’t stop until we achieve them. Then, we set new goals.
Embrace Challenge.
We grow when we’re challenged. That’s why we welcome mistakes and challenges as opportunities to learn and get better.
Care for the Whole Person.
We share a journey to fulfill our potential as whole people. We support that journey by honoring each other’s identities, emotions, and dreams AND by pushing each other from a place of belief and love.
Choose Joy.
We choose to see the purpose and joy that is within and around us, and we actively work to spread joy to others throughout each day.
Go Further Together.
We accomplish more together than we can alone. We join forces on big and small things. We do what we say we will do. We make choices with our team and family in mind.
our priorities
Rebuilding Our Team Identity by Being the Models of What We Expect of Others in our Community
As adults, we must create the conditions for students to be loved, cared for, and challenged in our school. We uphold the norms designed around Connection, Communication, Consistency/Trust, and Dignity to ensure we are serving our community to the best of our ability. We believe we are all learners and therefore are committed to constant self-reflection on our identities, biases, and practices to ensure we lead for racial equity in all aspects of our school so our students can thrive.
Create the Environment for Joyful Learning to Occur
We believe that relationships and consistent expectations are at the core of a positive school climate and therefore we must be intentional about the time we spend with students, the quality of our interactions, the micro-moments we create, and the way we hold students accountable, as all of these things have huge impacts and implications for how students see themselves in the world.
Academically Preparing and Serving ALL Students
In a world that actively and passively creates barriers to the success of Black & Brown children, we strive to deliver engaging, student-led, rigorous, and differentiated instruction so our students become independent critical thinkers who are responsible for their own learning and growth. We believe that every child has a unique way of learning and our job as educators is to prepare fully to serve the needs of all students.
Rebuilding Trusting & Respectful Partnerships with Families
We believe our families are key stakeholders in our school community whose assets are needed in order to effectively educate and serve our students. In order to live out this belief, we will be intentional and consistent about building relationships with families, communicate often about goals, needs, and expectations of students, provide tools needed to support student learning, and engage in respectful and culturally responsive communication/interactions.
