1, Wear approved safety glasses or goggles at all times during which any project work is done by yourself or by others in the room.
2. Use hearing protection with loud power equipment such as sanders and routers.
3. Students may not use woodworking machines until they have been given proper safety instructions by the instructor and received written safety approval from parent or guardian. Use of machines is a privilege which must be earned by demonstrating responsible behavior. Projects may be completed using hand tools as an alternative.
4. Machines must never be operated while instructor is out of the room.
5. Machines must be UNPLUGGED and allowed to come to a dead stop
before adjustments are made.
6. Long sleeves must be rolled up before operating machines. Also no loose or baggy clothes are allowed near machines. Open sandals should not be worn. Chains or jewelry must be removed completely, and long hair pinned back.
7. "Horseplay" is forbidden in the shop. No throwing anything or running, waving sticks, shooting missiles, etc.
8. Only the operator may turn the machine on and off, and is the only one allowed in the safety zone. The operator must wait at the machine until it has come to a complete stop. Do not walk away from a machine which is still running! This includes soldering irons and glue guns.
9. Keep guards in place, if the operation cannot be performed with it in place do not use the machine or tool; see the instructor in this instance.
10. Use push sticks and push blocks to guide wood through band saws and the router.
11. Use dust collection vacuums and protective masks when needed, such as with belt sander and router table.
12. When using a portable drill or drill press, clamp your work, and make sure you have not left the chuck key in the chuck.
13. Do not speak to or distract persons who are operating machines.
14. Approach every machine with the assumption that it is running. Never use your finger to clear jammed wood from around a blade.
15. If a machine is out of order or working poorly, report it to the instructor at once.
16. Report accidents and injuries at once to the instructor.
17. Never place your hands in the path of sharp cutting tools, or blades and never test the sharpness of a tool on your hand. Know where your hands are and will be as the work passes through the machine.
18. Begin cleanup 15 minutes before the end of the period.
Your safety, and the safety of your peers, is very important. If you endanger yourself and/or others at any time you will be asked to leave the lab. Students who are unable to demonstrate safe working habits will be assigned non-tool- based projects such as computer-aided design and graphics, or may do homework.

Always carve or cut in a direction away from you, and keep hands behind the tool. ⚠️
Always work by pushing the tools away from your body.
Never hold the piece in one hand and push the tool with the other- use a bench hook, vise, or clamp to hold the workpiece.
With gouges, always keep two hands on the tool or one hand on the gouge and the other on the mallet
When carving a spoon, carve the bowl first, then shape the rest of the piece.
BAND SAW SAFETY
Safety glasses must be worn when using the bandsaw
Do not use the bandsaw while wearing long sleeves, dangling jewelry, etc. Long hair should be tied back.
Lower the blade guard to no more than 1” above the piece you are cutting.
While cutting, be sure that your fingers are never behind the blade or inside the throat plate ( circle around the blade). Your fingers should always be at least 2” from the blade- use a push stick to guide pieces when needed!
Never put your fingers near the blade to remove pieces of wood when the saw is running. If the blade jams, turn the saw off and unplug it before clearing the jam.
Never leave the saw running and walk away.
Keep at least 2 feet from a bandsaw operator.
When cutting,
o Avoid backing out of cuts
o Make short relief cuts to break up long cuts or sharply curved cuts.
o Do not make sharp turns
o If cutting a small object, leave a ‘handle’ until the very end.
I have been instructed in the above safety rules and will follow them:

12 Tips for Router-Table Safety
1. Use push blocks to position your hands a safe distance from the bit.
2. Large-diameter bits are for use only in a router table. Using bits over 1 in. dia. in a handheld router can easily cause you to lose control of the tool.
3. Always wear eye and hearing protection.
4. Take light cuts. Heavy cuts invite kickback. If necessary, move the fence closer to the bit or switch to a larger guide bearing.
5. Use a featherboard to support the workpiece against the router table or fence.
6. Never climb-cut. Always feed the stock from right to left. (see illustration at right)
7. Avoid shaping small stock. Instead, shape a larger piece and reduce it in size afterwards. If you must shape a small piece, build an appropriate jig or secure the work within the jaws of a wooden handscrew clamp.
8. Always use a guard. If the fence didn’t come with a guard, purchase an aftermarket guard or devise one of your own.
9. Never start the router with the bit in contact with the stock.
10. Don’t force the bit or overload the router.
11. Secure the motor in the base before starting the router.
12. Don’t bottom out the bit in the collet or partially insert the bit. Instead, completely insert the bit, and then back off approximately 1/16 in.
