President Trump picked former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi (R-FL) as his next U.S. Attorney General. Bondi, an early and "outspoken defender of Trump,” is well-positioned to politicize the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and could reverse the Biden administration’s “aggressive” enforcement of antitrust laws designed to protect consumers and small businesses.
Lobbying Clients Face DOJ Lawsuits, Investigations, And Controversies:
Since 2019, Bondi has been a lobbyist for major corporate lobbying firm Ballard Partners, serving as chair of its Corporate Regulatory Compliance practice. Bondi has directly lobbied for major companies that have faced DOJ trouble, including Amazon, General Motors, and Uber.
Additionally, while Bondi has been in a leadership position at Ballard Partners, it represented Boeing, Google, Amazon, and Blackstone, which have faced high-profile antitrust and fraud lawsuits from the DOJ. Google is facing a “landmark” antitrust lawsuit from the DOJ and Bondi has directly lobbied on behalf of Amazon, which is undergoing a major antitrust lawsuit from the Federal Trade Commission, which may refer any criminal antitrust violations to the DOJ.
Bondi has directly lobbied for top private prison company the GEO Group, which saw its profits jump as the first Trump administration increased spending on private prisons and is expected to see hundreds of millions of dollars in extra revenue from President Trump’s mass deportation plans. Notably, the GEO Group directly balked at President Biden’s order to wind down the DOJ’s use of private prisons.
Undermine the DOJ’s Consumer Protection Duties:
The DOJ serves a critical role in protecting consumers, including through its Consumer Protection Branch and its Antitrust Division. Pam Bondi, who repeatedly put corporate and wealthy interests before her constituents while Florida’s attorney general, poses a threat to these important efforts.
After taking thousands of dollars from a foreclosure mill to win her first run for Florida attorney general in 2010, Bondi “protected foreclosure fraudsters” who used false evidence to force families out of their homes.
In 2013, Bondi shied away from filing a fraud lawsuit against Trump University—which later agreed to settle three related fraud lawsuits filed on behalf of cheated students for $25 million—after she “personally solicited” a $25,000 political contribution from Donald Trump.
Politicization of the U.S. Department of Justice:
Pam Bondi is well-positioned to undermine the DOJ’s long-standing independence and carry out Trump’s vow of “retribution” against his perceived political enemies amid her long record of loudly broadcasting her political loyalty to him throughout his many unprecedented legal controversies.
Bondi represented Trump during his first impeachment, when he was accused of abusing his power by trying to pressure Ukraine to investigate then-candidate Biden.
Bondi backed Trump’s widely discredited claims of election fraud in the 2020 cycle.
In 2024, Bondi appeared in person to support Trump during his New York hush money trial, where he was convicted on 34 felony counts.
